Journals
2 Journals Written out of class
The first journal will contain 3 one-page entries written about three of the short stories on
your syllabus.
It will be typed, double-spaced on regular bond paper with a cover sheet.
You need to discuss an element of short fiction and relate it to the story. This would
include point of view, character, setting, tone and style, irony, theme, symbols, etc.
There are sections in your book on each of these elements of short fiction.
This journal will be due week 3 on Thursday.
The second journal will contain 3 one-page entries written about three of the poems on
your syllabus.
It also will be typed, double-spaced on regular bond paper with a cover sheet.
In this case you need to consider how poetry speaks to you. Is it through an image? A
short narration (story)? Do the metaphors or similes make sense to you? Do they bring
meaning into the poem? Does the poem use personification? Does this help you to
understand the meaning of the poem? Is the poem straight- forward or does the meaning
seem hidden? Do you understand the poem, but have a problem with what the poem is
trying to convey? Does the poem use alliteration? Is this useful to you as a reader. Why
would a child like alliteration? Consider some of the songs and ballads. What are the
writers trying to communicate? Find a way to discuss a poem that means something to
you. This journal will be due Week 9.
One Journal written in class
The third journal will be written in class during the drama section.
As we discuss plays and watch renditions of plays, I will ask you to write about the play
in class.
Depending on the class response to the play, I will decide on the question when the time
arrives at the end of the semester.
We will read Trifles aloud (selected students), then watch a short rendition of the play.
At that point, we will compare the two and you will write in class..
You will read two plays outside of class, Death of a Salesman and A Doll’s House. We
will watch a rendition of each play and then I will ask you to write in class.
