School Background

East Side High School ( ESHS) is the largest public high school in Newark, with over 2000 students and 130 teachers.

East Side serves a diverse student body, with 56% Hispanic, 25% African- American, 15% White, and 4% other. Approximately 15% of

East Side’s students have special needs and approximately 45% of East Side’s students are enrolled in the bilingual program.

Over 90 % of ESHS students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. With such a diverse student body, requiring intense

differentiation, it is imperative that school leaders provide rigorous academic opportunities to meet student needs.

ESHS has almost 50% of the student body on the honor roll ( 3.3 grade point average or better). The school offers an

International Baccalaureate ( IB) Program and 14 Advanced Proficient ( AP) courses and an Early College program partnership with Essex

County College( ECC).

The Value of College Readiness

College graduates earn more money during their working lives than people with high school diplomas. According to statistical data from The U.S. Census Bureau people with bachelor’s degrees earn nearly 2 million USD, associate’s degrees nearly 1.5 million USD, and high school diplomas nearly 1.2 million USD in the course of their careers.

.

While obtaining a college degree can be expensive, college graduates earn more money during their lives than those who drop out of college. In the long run attending college should be viewed as an investment that pays off later in life and contributes to a higher living standard.

In sheer monetary terms, a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree is expected to earn twice as much as a college dropout. This translates into about 1.6 million USD more in lifetime earnings than workers with a high school diploma.
