Chemistry Lab Report Experiment # 7 Title : Molality Colligative Properties Purpose : The purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the effects of two different salts on the temperature and consistency of ice cream by measuring the amount of salt in particular ice using the molality unit.
Chloride dissolves in water. Calcium Chloride has the above molecular equation 2 moles of ions for sodium chloride; 3 moles for calcium chloride and this makes a difference. NaCl Calulation of molality->4 molal solution of NaClConcentration unit of solute per mass solvent.
The difference in concentration will impact freezing point depression. Freezing poing depression is 1 type of collogative property. Conclusion: In this experiment, two different salts, sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium chloride (CaCl2), were used to demonstrate the colligative properties of freezing point depression. 0. mols of both salts were weighed out and combined with ice cream ingredients and placed in two separate bags. The initial temperature of the sodium chloride was 2.4°C, and the initial temperature of the calcium chloride was 0.6°C. After 15 minutes of shaking, the temperature of the sodium chloride was - 4.5°C,(we predicted 7°C) and the temperature of the calcium chloride was - 10.9 C. (We predicted 11°C) The calcium chloride melted more than the sodium chloride, and the ice cream made with the calcium chloride was thicker and more solid. This experiment showed that the concentration of the salts affects the freezing point depression and demonstrated the colligative properties of freezing point depression.
Notes: The motor will spin it and take about 20 - 30 minutes to make ice cream This happens because Salt is a colligative property. ( A colligative property of matter is that whenever you dissolve a solute into a solvent (such as salt into water) the particles of the salt lower the freezing point of water or ice. This is because it interferes with the packing of the ice Lowers the freezing point, making it colder. How do we determine how much salt to use ○ 1 part salt, 8 parts ice Molality - unit of concentration Molality = number of MOLS of solute / kg of solvent = m .30 mol / .50 kg = .60 m (or molal) solution One reason this unit is used for salt, water, and ice is because we use the unit kg for solvent. This is important because often the temperature will change, and mass does not change with temperature Molarity - a similar sounding unit Molarity is defined as moles of solute / per volume L of solution Solutions and solvents do change with temperature. They can compress, contract and expand. We rather use molality when dealing with temperature
