Yao Ming by Xu Zhi Guang Yao Ming , the first super star Chinese basketball player in the NBA, comes from Shanghai in China. He has a basketball family his father and mother are basketball players on the teams of Shanghai and Chinese national team. Yao inherited their stature and their interest in basketball. YaoMing was born almost two feet tall. When he was ten years old the bus drivers did not believe his age and tried to charge him the adult fare in his hometown of Shanghai.. In China the average of people’s height is about 5” 8 ’ so Yao’s height is rare in China. He moved his career to Houston in October of 2002. That is every basketball player’s dream, the NBA. He began playing for the Houston Rockets. Just a little before he went to the Rockets, YaoMing played for the Chinese in the World Basketball Championships. He showed the U.S public his abilities and he got his pass to the NBA, according to the source from Biography Resource Center: “Averaging twenty on points, nine point three rebounds, and hitting seventy five point three percent of his shots.” From November of 2002 YaoMing had to face to the real NBA world. According to Wikipedia: “ In the first seven games he had averaged four point three points and three point four rebounds.” Maybe it was not that good result for a super NBA star, but it was really good result for baby NBA player YaoMing. YaoMing shows the U.S public it is not only western people who can play basketball well. And Yao also shows he is always affable to others he never shows off anything in front of people. After that, her family moved to Australia In high school even though Nicole Kidman really loved ballet, she eventually chose drama. Nicole Kidman’s first stage was role in elementary school performing “in a Christmas Pageant.” As a teenager, she did not play with her friends or have fun. She would rather spend the time to practice her acting. When Nicole Kidman received a personal letter to praise her, she decided to drop out of the high school and become a full time actress. She showed up in films and had T. V offers. She preformed in different kinds of movies. Nicole is working hard on her career. Also she has won a lot of awards in Hollywood. Since then, her acting more became skillful and her career has developed smoothly. She preformed in films, such as To Die For, Moulin Rouge and The Hours. That film made her not only career reach a higher peak; she got good critical reviews and many film prizes. She makes a great effort to improve her acting. Therefore, he was considered naïve and not very intelligent by many politicians. The world was in constant turmoil. His down to earth nature became his strength when he negotiated with foreign leaders and they dealt with personal conflicts in their own lands. Through his presidency he continued to pursue peaceful relations in countries in conflict like Israel, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nicaragua, Ethiopia and North Korea. His Presidency was surrounded by many levels of disagreement. The world and its leaders were not easy to communicate with. His presidency was overshadowed with high unemployment, troubles with Iran and his energy program was constantly stalled in Congress and the Senate. President Carter had his share of problems in his own country as well as abroad. He was frustrated until the final days of his presidency trying to release the hostages from Iran. Looking back he did achieve many positive directions in the banking, airline and oil industries and the elimination of stockpiling nuclear weapons in Russia (Horn Book Magazine -1994) President Carter served the military as a cadet at the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. After finishing there, he became involved in community affairs and was elected as a Georgia State Senator. Mr. Carter then served as the Governor of the State of Georgia. His political dreams were not finished and he became the Democratic President in 1976 after defeating Republican President Gerald Ford. When Pele was discovered by Santos, his former team, he started to work hard in order to perfect his soccer’ skills. He worked with coaches and teammates doing long hours of practice in order to perfect his abilities to play a kind of magic soccer. Later, he demonstrated that his performance was not comparable with any star through the history. “He scored an average of one goal in every international game he played. Between 1956 and 1974, Pele scored a total of 1220 goals-not unlike hitting an average of 70 home runs every year for a decade and a half”(Kissinger,H). Pele is a celebrity in Brazil; he was officially declared a national treasure in 1961 by Brazil’s president at that time. Pele’s dream is to see soccer all over the world. He is passionate about helping children and encourages them to play soccer. He says that soccer is an inexpensive sport that could be played by everybody in any condition around the world. He has also been involved with UNICEF and other children’s charities for many years (“Pele”, 2007). Pele is a good example of people that have the zeal to help children who are the future of the world. Nowadays after all his demonstrations, Pele is one of the most important soccer players around the world, and although today he is not an active soccer player, he is considered a soccer institution. She is a great actress with a beautiful body. Lately Angelina Jolie became very popular. First, she started dating Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston’s husband at that time, and then she adopted an orphan from Vietnam, Pax, who changed her life. Everything is going fine and out of nowhere some rumors say that she and Brad Pitt are going to split. Angelina Jolie’s hard childhood and present commitments with adoptions negatively effect her relationships with Brad Pitt, which might cause break up. Angelina Jolie had a hard childhood after her father, famous actor Jon Voight, abandoned her when she was only one year old (Wikipedia, 2007). When Jolie was a kid, nobody liked her. Mostly, it was because she was very weird; she wore black clothes all the time, and she also collected knives. It does not look like a standard behavior for a teenager girl. Now Angelina grew up, and also became a famous actress with her own family and four kids: Max, Zahara, Shiloh, newly adopted Pax, and handsome boyfriend Brad Pitt. Even though she is a busy actress, she still has time for her kids. After she adopted Pax, she wants to spend more time with him. Jolie justifies spending so much time with Pax because she does not want this kid to go through a hard childhood as she did. She hopes that after a while he would realize that he has family now. “We are slowly beginning to build his trust and bond” Jolie says (M. Tauber and M. Green, 2007). Unfortunately, it affects her relationships with Brad Pitt and now he wants to split up with her. He says that she is not longer the woman who he felt in love with and that she spends too much time traveling in developing countries and adopting more and more kids. Also, by paying too much attention to Pax, she does not have time for the rest of the family. Some of Brad’s friends said he is on the edge, and he wants to break up the relationship (Falling apart, 2007). Just like everybody else, Angelina has to choose her priorities in life. Should she go for building a relationship with a celebrity, which statistically has very little chance of success? Should she follow her heart and help orphan kids by adopting them and spending her time and money? Or should she try to find a healthy balance that would satisfy both Brad and her dreams? I think the balance is the answer, as one person may never know what the future might bring, but it is important to keep both the loved people and dreams close. Chinese government tried ways to be against the monopoly of Microsoft, and Gates had thought that is a painful controversy. Bill Gate paid a visit to China after he got business form Australia. On June 30, 2004, Gate had met the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in Beijing. The premier pointed out that China welcomed the well-known business company such as Microsoft to build the technique industry with China. Although China had set up laws to fight against the monopoly, Gates said that Microsoft cooperation would concentrate on the long-term software development in China, and would continue to strengthen the cooperation with the Chinese parties. Soon after Gate’s speech, the media asked him many straight questions. Gates said that many countries had their laws about anti-monopoly. Spring2007 Personality Profiles Jackie Chan was born in Hong Kong on April 7th, 1954. His parents worked at he French embassy in Hong Kong. His father liked to practice Kung Fu with Jackie every morning, because he believed that would help build Jackie’s character, teaching him patience, strength and courage. When he was 7 years old. He started to learn drama. Willie was becoming his best friend and manager. He helped Jackie start his career. Jackie was becoming a success in Asia. He became famous in America by the movie, Rush Hour. Now, Jackie is not only working in his movies, he still spends time on his charity work. Jackie Chan is nice and friendly; he likes to help people who need help. Jackie Chan has his own charitable foundation on 1988. That helped Hong Kong’s young people who need money to study. Recently, the foundation has expanded to include medical services, aid to victims of natural disaster or illness. Jackie Chan has published his own biography--<< I am Jackie Chan>>. He would like to share his own experience for everybody. In that book, Jackie will tell you more about his childhood and adulthood. In the film, he has lot of dangerous action, but he doesn’t like to use stuntmen. I like to watch the movies by Jackie Chan, because his movies are good and exciting. His personality is very good and nice. His life was arduous, when he was 7 years old; he left his parent and stayed in Hong Kong on his own. Will Smith, whose birth name is Willard Christopher Smith, Jr, is a 39-year old American actor and hip hop artist. Will Smith is a famous Hollywood movie superstar. He is an Academy Award winner, Golden Globe nominatee and a multiple Grammy-winning hip hop artist. His successes in many major entertainment media in the United States: film, and the music industry. (Wikipedia April 2007) Will Smith is leading actor for many films, such as “Men in Black”, “Bad Boys”, “Bad Boys 2”, “Back in Black”, “I, Robot”, “Six Degrees of Separation”, and “The Pursuit of Happiness”, totally 30 movies.(Wikipedia， April 2007). He left me with a deep memory about his humor and his wonderful acting in all of his movies that I watched. I love his movies, especially the new movie “The Pursuit of Happiness” he brought us this year. This time Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith cooperate together as father and son in the movie. It is about a single father and his son who become homeless but later on the father turns into a rich stockbroker. It was a very impressive story and the movie earned two golden globe nominations. Moreover, Will Smith was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for this movie.(Tim Macguire/Corbis, Apr.30, 2006). It was a successful movie and his excellent acting has won a lot spectators’ heart. After watching his new movie, I have learned that we should never give up and always believe that happiness would come one day if we worked hard enough today. Will Smith showed his excellent abilities in this role. I was moved by this father. In recent years, Will Smith has become one of the most famous actors in Hollywood. In music industry, Will Smith is a great actor too. He worked with home base, which is the fourth best seller album by hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince in 1991. It reached #12 in the mainstream U.S. charts. The album was certified double Platinum, reached #5 Top R&B/Hip Hop albums, and won an American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album.(Wikipedia April 2007) As a multiple Grammy-winning hip hop artist, Will Smith is also a successful person. He has many solo hits, such as Big Willie Style, Willennium, Born to Reign, Greatest Hits and Lost and Found. His music is famous and popular as well. Will Smith is a very hard working guy. He is a good sweet guy, helpful and obliging. He started his career at 12 and became a Fresh Prince when he was 20. {Richard Schickel, Apr.30, 2006}. It is really hard for a young guy to be successful in the public life. He has ambition and he wants to be the best movie star in Hollywood. And every role he acted in his movie is successful and leaves a profound memory. All he wants is to be “dazzling” and “eclectic”, and he is on the way. He is almost there. I believe he can make it in future. He will be better and better in his major entertainment media in the United States: film, and the music industry.

Shakira likes to use her mouth for conversation, kisses, and singing. She likes to eat chocolate and drink too much coffee. Shakira is from Columbia and she speaks English and Portuguese fluently as well as Spanish. When she visits her country, the food in Columbia is very fatty and her favorite food is fried Yucca and Sancocho. She likes to talk about her boyfriend that she has known for five years; she also talks about the rings on her left index finger. Shakira is a very talented girl. Even though she is already very young, she continues to improve her talent in singing and she is a famous person around the world. (Perry, Simon, 2005) Shakira took four statues during the Seventh Latin Grammy Award at Madison square Garden. She is not the only person who has at least three trophies. For example; Andrea Borelli, Ricky Martin, and Michael Bloomberg from New York City each have three trophies (Callo, Phil, 2006).Shakira will be one of the participants with her album “LA Tortura” a music video. (Wooden, Alex, 2006) Shakira says when she is singing in Spanish or English for her albums she reaches a long audience. After two years Shakira released two new albums. The first album in English is “Oral Fiction Volume2”, and the second album in Spanish is “Fijaction Oral Volume1”.Shakira likes to take any kind on challenges, and has been singing and producing albums since she was 18 years old.(the Crossover Queen,2005). I think about that Shakira has ambitions and talent, like singing, and she is not afraid to take risks, also she likes challenges. Shakira doesn’t want her audience to be sad so she sings in Spanish and English, but I advise her to not drink too much coffee because it will give her too much nervous energy, and it is not good for her health. Spring2007 Personality Profiles Oprah Winfrey: An Incredibly Amazing Person by Lesbia Duarte Oprah Winfrey, the talk-show diva, share’s her wealth with the less fortunate. This incredible woman is a loving person. Last year, 2006 was a turning point for people living in Africa and New Orleans because even though some lost all there possession, Oprah Winfrey was able to provide very much help to them. Oprah Winfrey was born January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She spent her first six years living in poverty with her grandma. When she was 13, she received a scholarship to attend Nicollet High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Like many teenagers, at the end of the 1960s, Winfrey rebelled, ran away from home and onto the streets. When she was 14, she became pregnant, but lost the baby shortly after birth. Her father was very encouraging and made her education her first priority. (Wikipedia, 2007). Her true media career began at the age of 17. When she worked at a local radio station in Tennessee. In 1985, Winfrey co-stared in Steven Spielberg’s film, The Color Purple. In 1986, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. On September 8, 1986 she starred on the first national broadcast of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Oprah Winfrey is a very hard working woman; she has been ranked the richest African-American Woman of the 20th^ Century. She paid for all the girls’ education. In 2007, she bought 65 homes for people that lost everything in Hurricane Katrina. Hillary Clinton is a powerful female person in the political world. She is a strong woman that combines hard work, intelligence a confident mind, and a powerful reputation. She was born in 1947 to a middle class family in Chicago. After she graduated from law school, she got married with Bill Clinton. They have one daughter. When Bill Clinton became the president of the United States, she became the First Lady in the White House and focused on health care, child welfare, and women rights. In fact, these were her passions since she worked for the Children’s Defense Fund in Washington DC before she became first lady. (Gale Research, 2007) Hillary Clinton is a powerful female person with the potential to change the world through politics. She has been a senator from New York since 2000, winning the election with more votes than her Republican opponent Rick Lazio. While she worked in the Senate, she visited soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, secured billions of dollars for the World Trade Center’s redevelopment, opposed tax cuts from President George W. Bush, and also opposed an Amendment to ban same sex marriage. In 2006, she was reelected again over Republican John Spencer. However, the victory, which cost $ 36 million dollars, is expensive. During her second term, she also supported a bill that would make the soldiers leave Iraq by a certain date. (Wikipedia, 2007) Hillary Clinton said she wanted to be president and announced she would win the presidential race, and in 2008, the United States may have the first female president. “After six years of George Bush, it is time to renew the promise of America,” she said. She also wants “bringing ‘the right end’ to the war in Iraq, reducing the deficit, making the country energy independent and health care affordable. (CNN, 2007) She will be under the Democratic Party, with her opponent, Senator Barack Obama, also joining the presidential race. She raised $26 million in April, and she wants to raise at least $60 million by the end of 2007. Also by April 1, 2007, Obama also raised nearly as much as she did. (Wikipedia, Presidential Election, 2007) I admire her because she is a good female person in politics. I am interested in her becoming a president of the USA. When she becomes president, it will be interesting to see her in the White House again. I also know about her background with her husband and the happiness in their lives. As the First Lady I think she has a passion to help out the world as much as she can. I think her job as a senator and the experience of a lawyer can reach all of the female citizens in the USA. She is an inspiration of what a successful female can become. As a country that now accepts female in politics, the USA is currently changing and may make the world change too. In my culture it will be very different because the males have all of the power. Now every person in America is being equal. She was the fifth child in her family. She had wanted to be an actress since she was young; she did well at singing and dancing. She enrolled in the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing in 1985 where she was discovered by her long time collaborator director Zhang Yimou. After the film, Red Sorghum, the director Zhang and Gong Li became a successful film couple during the 1990s. Their films were famous around the world, because their films were innovative, anisotropic and retroactive. Their films were digging deep into Chinese culture and human natural. In the films, her full expression reflects the manner of women has been treated in the traditional Chinese society. In 1993 Gong Li moved on to work with Director Chen Kaige instead director Zhang Yimou in the stunning film Farewell, My Concubine, which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival (Biographical essay). “I want to be the Michael Jordan of golf, I’d like to be the best ever” Tiger Woods said. He is the best golfer of the world, but he still wants to improve even more. Also, he has had high and low point in his life. Tiger Woods, born in Cypress, California on December 30, 1975, is a very talented and influential man in the world of golf, but he is still looking for the best ways to enhance himself. Since 1996, he has gained 25 pounds of muscle because stronger muscles can help players contain their shots better. So, it helped him to finish in the top 10 in driving distance in each of the past three seasons. In 2005, even though Woods won 12 major championships, he never gave up on trying to get better. He has led the PGA Tour money list seven times and finished it in the best in 2006. He also is a hardy man because he won every match in which he has held or shares the lead entering the final round and his dominance is so complete with Chris DiMarco, a head of other player’s (Keith, 2007) In 2006, Tiger Woods had some low points like the death of his father in which he took a break from golf to deal with and not being able to make the cuts for major. But there were also some high points like eight victories. With these victories he also broke records like being the first player to defend golf’s oldest championship British Open in twenty three years (Woods’ Remarks, 2007). The biggest news is that the world’s No. 1 golfer Tiger Woods will be a father this summer, and he said that he is very happy and wishes his father could be around. At the end of this month, he will start his 2007 tournament in the Buick Invitational, but he skipped the season- opener because he wanted to have more time to accompany his wife, Elin Nordegren, who married with Woods in October 2004, in a special time of their lives (Woods Remark, 2007). Tiger Woods is successful at the sport of golf because he has a spirit of toughness and never gives up, and he is also looking for the ways to improve himself even though he wins many matches. It is worth mentioning and studying. This is why I like to read his story. I hope Woods will be a good father and has a happy life with his wife and his child. He is deserving of this happiness because I think he is a very hardworking man. Many people with his accomplishments and talent probably would not even want to work and continue to further his skills. He strives to be a better player and person says a lot about himself. Tiger Woods is one of the greatest players in the game of golf and the game of life.
