A health education program for 4th grade students at south school, focusing on basic hygiene, safety, and nutrition. The program, led by the school nurse and guidance counselor, includes a poem and interactive activities to teach students about the importance of personal cleanliness and safety. Students are encouraged to draw pictures of 'dirty sid' and 'clean sid' and are given certificates as members of the 'clean kids club'. The document also discusses the use of personal hygiene products in school and encourages parents to contact the school nurse with any questions or concerns.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
As part of our health education curriculum, we have a program that we run for each grade level. Our 4th^ grade program is a basic hygiene/safety/ nutrition class that is done yearly by the school nurse accompanied by our guidance counselor, Ms.Rountree.
The 4th^ grade classes will be held during the week of January 18th. Honestly, it is one of my favorite parts of my job as the students really enjoy it. The class begins with a funny poem (which is on the back of this letter for your review.) After reading the poem the students help us “clean up Sid’s act.” We talk about the importance of hand washing, brushing teeth, bathing, clean clothes, etc. We think of healthy foods “Sid” could eat. We also talk about ways to keep “Sid” safe, such as wearing a helmet, not talking to strangers, and safety belts in the car.
After the class, the teachers allow the students to draw a photo of “Dirty Sid” and “Clean Sid.” It is an enjoyable and comfortable way to talk about very basic hygiene and safety issues. Each student is given a certificate as a member of the “Clean Kids Club.”
We encourage the students to begin to assume some responsibility for themselves and do so according to their age and cognitive understanding. There are times when a teacher may send a student to my office who may need to use deodorant or brush their teeth. I keep personal hygiene products such as toothbrushes, deodorant etc in my office if the students need them during the day. Being aware that not all students have the same understanding regarding personal hygiene, I like to make sure that everyone, both parents and students are comfortable with us encouraging the students to brush their teeth, use deodorant and attend to other hygiene issues that may occur while in school.
My goal, as always is to assure that all the students needs are being met. Your input is important. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the class or in regards to your child and/or the use of personal hygiene products in school. I may be reached at 781-767-3565 during the day.
Sincerely,
Sheila Sterling RN South School Nurse
With thanks, inspiration and a few borrowed lines from Shel Silverstein's poem^ By Gerri Harvey The Dirtiest Man in the World
Oh, I'm Dirty Sid, The World's Dirtiest Kid I never take baths or showers I can't see my shirt, it's so covered with dirt And my ears have enough to grow flowers.
Whenever my mother sends me to bathe I gingerly get in the tub I try not to get too much of me wet And I never "Rub-a-dub-dub"!
The showers are either too hot or too cold But sometimes I stand there and rinse I've always felt if I get wet I might melt So I am pretty hard to convince.
I don't brush my teeth, I don't wash my hair I try to avoid touching soap My clothes often reek cuz I wear them all week And my sneakers stink beyond hope.
I think that my sneakers wouldn't be bad If I wore socks on my feet now and then I tried that once, kept them on for 6 months But they smelled worse than they'd ever been.
I don't wash my face, except once a year And my nails, I don't scrub or cut them In my hair can be seen glitter from last Halloween And my eyelashes stick when I shut them.
The thought of a towel and soap makes me howl So when people have something to tell me They don't come up and tell it- they stand back and yell it I think they're afraid they might smell me.
Now what I want to know, what I want to find out The changes that need to be made To change this whole scene and make myself clean Now that I'm in fourth grade.
So kid’s can you help me and possibly tell me I think there's some secret knack I don't want to stink and I really do think It's time that I clean up my act!
