SHORT ANSWER: USE COMPLETE SENTENCES TO RECEIVE FULL CREDIT.
PLEASE WRITE LEGIBLY! ANSWERS SHOULD BE 2-4 SENTENCES LONG.
-1 point per question if not in complete sentences.
Please give three lines of evidence for the commonality of all life.
Same genetic code
Same building blocks (DNA, RNA)
Same biosynthetic processes (transcription, translation)
Describe the two ways that bacteria can become resistant to an antibiotic.
Random mutations
Overuse or misuse of antibiotics (not taking the entire batch, using wrong kind, taking
antibiotics for a virus)
Briefly describe why the Biosphere 2 project failed.
Compost heap led to excessive amounts of bacteria to be produced, which led to a
depletion of oxygen. Additional oxygen had to be pumped in to alleviate this situation.
What are three features of honey bees that have made them successful?
Highly organized (Eusocial) society with division of labor
Generalist pollinators allowing them to exploit a wide variety of flowers
Show intelligence through communication and learning
Intelligence in the squids, octopods, and cuttle fish is thought to be high because
of what feature of this group? This feature helps control the ability to change
what attribute of these animals to signal danger or blend in with their
environment?
The feature this group has is it's large brain, which is the largest (based on brain to body
size) of any invertebrate.
This large brain allows them to control their color through cells known as
chromatophores
Briefly describe the Pollination Syndrome in plants and describe what type of
flower (size, color, and reward) you might see in a flower pollinated by bats.
Pollination syndrome is the suite of traits used by plants to attract a certain group of
pollinators. A bat pollinated plant would be large, white, open at night, have a strong
odor, and offer a lot of nectar as a reward.
