Orange Coast College Physics 185 Name: Dr. Arnold Guerra HI Experiment # Uniformly Accelerated Motion Objective: To determine the acceleration of an object moving under the influence of a constant force. Procedure: The experimental set up will be explained in class. Take notes carefully. (1) Record the mass of the cart (m,) and the mass of the hanging block (mz). (2) Record the time taken by the cart to travel 10 cm, 20 m, 25 cm, 30 cm, ... and 60 cm. Do this twice and calculate the average time. Use the table in the next page. Analysis of Data: (1) For a uniformly accelerated motion in which the initial velocity is zero (vo = 0), we have the relation: xatat?, 2 Plot x versus t”. Determine the acceleration of the cart ftom the slope of the best linear fit to the data points. How is the slope of the best-fitted line related to the acceleration, a, of the cart? (2) Using Newton’s second law of motion, determine the theoretical value of the magnitude of the acceleration, a, of the cart. Turn in this calculation with your report. (3) Calculate the % error using as your theoretical value your result from part (2), and as your experimental value your result from part (1) above. Discuss sources of error in your conclusions. m
