Montelukast
Anti-Inflammatory Drugs/Leukotrine Modifiers
Leukotrine modifiers work to suppress the
effect of leukotrines. Decrease inflammation
by preventing the activation of leukotrines.
Route: PO Oral/chewable tablets
and oral granules.
Sprinkle over or mix in
applesauce, carrots, rice,
icecream or place directly under
the tongue.
Do not take again for 24 hours.
Interact with other drugs. Clients taking phenobarbital,
rifampin or phenytoin require higher doses of montelukast.
Do not give leukotrine modifiers for acute asthma
excerbations or status asthmatics because of the time it
takes for drug to take effect. Use in caution with clients who
have severe asthma because of higher level efficacy than
other drugs.
No serious untoward side effects occur. Slight risk of
adverse neuropsychiatric symptoms such as suicidal
thoughts/behaviors.
-Mild analgesics are required for
clients who experience
headache after administration.
-Monitor respirations, rate/depth.
-Monitor/assess lung sounds
-Observe lips and fingernials
cyanosis s/s
Patient can breathe more easily.
-Report any headaches after
administration.
-Encourage use of OTC
analgesic medications.
-Monitor clients for any
behaviroal changes indicating
Sucidial Ideation or depression.
