Pharmacologic: Phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor; Therapeutic: antihypertensive, erectile dysfunction agent
Enhances the effect of nitric oxide release in
the penis by stimulation, relaxes smooth
muscle and increases blood flow to the corpus
cavernosum producing an erection.
PO: reconstituted powder for oral
suspension; onset: 30-60 min,
peak: 30-120 min
Alpha blockers, amlodipine, nitrates: possible additive
blood pressure lowering effects; erythromycin
ketoconazole other CYP3A4 inhibitors: significantly
increase systemic exposure
Concomitant riociguat, guanylate cyclase stimulator,
continuous or intermittent nitrate therapy, hypersensitivity to
the drug and its components
CNS: CVA, seizures
CV: heart failure, hypotension, myocardial infarction or
ischemia, ventricular arrhythmias
RESP: pulmonary hemorrhage
Do not administer this drug to
patients who take nitrates!
Monitor the patient being treated
for pulmonary hypertension
secondary to sickle cell disease
for vaso-occlusive crisis
Treats erectile dysfunction
Explain that the drug is used to
treat erectile dysfunction and
may be taken up to four hours
before sexual activity!
Instruct diabetic patient to
monitor blood glucose level
frequently
