all measurements taken right side of the body triceps - vertical suprailiac - 45 degree angle thigh - vertical pectoral - diagonal abdominal - vertical whats the purpose of cardiovascular testing - to detect if there is metabolic disease, cancer, diabetes, high bool pressure, coronary heart disease submaximal exercises test - 3-minute step test - step for 3 minutes check vitals after for recovery time rockport 1 mile walk test - vigorous walk for 1 mile, palpate the pulse 10 sec maximal exercises test - treadmill or cycle ergometer - patient is pushed to achieve max work effort 4 advantages of submax cv test - establish current health status gauge progress and show comparison educate and involve client demonstrate prudence and knowledge protocols for 3 minute step test - explain purpose and procedure to client set metronome to 96 bpm & platform at 12" hight after 3 minutes set client down and check pulse within 5 seconds verify recovery rate with chart muscle fitness - muscle strength - ability of muscle or group to exert max force for 1rm muscle endurance - ability of a muscle or group to exert submax force for several reps 1rm test protocol - bench press - warm up with stretching and limbering up progressively add weight (3-5 min between attempts) find 1rm then divide weight by clients body weight disadvantages of 1rm test - may cause injury valsalva maneuver lack of portability of equipment clients unfamiliar with equipment

procedure for testing flexibility - trunk - client lies prone with hands held under shoulders pushing body up keeping hips in contact w/ floor elbows should extend with no pain procedure for testing flexibility - hip flexor - iliopsoas clients lie supine clasp hands behind right knee pull to chest until touching trunk protocols for sit and reach test - lower back, hamstrings, remove shoes and sit on floor legs out front, feet dorsiflex place tape in alignment with the 15" make at the heels place hangs on top of one another then reach as far as one can go (keeping knees on ground) exhale out when going down make 3 attempts describe protocols for assessing - lordosis - client stands against the wall with feet 1" away breath normal and press shoulders against wall if there is more then a palm distance between wall and back this is kyphosis -strengthen. abdominals -stretch iliopsoas, erector spinae describe protocols for assessing - kyphosis - client march in place then stand normal if upper back is hunched or slouched forward and chin id jetting out over body -strengthen scapular adductors (mid trap & rhomboids) -stretch shoulder horizon adductors (pectoralis major, anteriordeltoids) describe protocols for assessing - scoliosis - client stands against the wall with feet 1" away breath normal and press shoulders against wall if there is more then a palm distance between wall and back this is kyphosis -strengthen. abdominals -stretch iliopsoas, erector spinae describe protocols for assessing - hip & shoulder height - client stands against wall hip width apart, no shoes measure both iliac crest from the floor (a difference more the a 1/4" is bad) measure both shoulders from the floor (a difference more the a 1/4" is bad) -refer to physical clinic
