Altitudes and Perpendicular Bisectors in Triangles, Study notes of Geography

The concepts of altitudes and perpendicular bisectors in triangles. An altitude is a segment with one endpoint at a vertex and the other on the opposite side. A perpendicular bisector is a line or segment containing the midpoint and perpendicular to the side. In some cases, the perpendicular bisector of a side can also be an altitude.

What you will learn

  • Can the perpendicular bisector of a side always be an altitude in a triangle?
  • How is a perpendicular bisector related to an altitude in a triangle?
  • What is an altitude in a triangle?

Section 62

An altitude of a triangle is a perpendicular segment in which one endpoint is at a vertex and the other endpoint is on the side opposite that vertex. altitude

Altitude

The altitude is inside the triangle The altitude is a side of the triangle The altitude is outside the triangle An altitude of a triangle may not always lie inside the triangle. acute triangle right triangle obtuse triangle Tell whether each red segment is an altitude of the triangle.

Example 1

Determine whether each red line or segment is a perpendicular bisector , an altitude , or both in each triangle.
