The cartoon “The white man’s burden (Apologies to Kipling)” published by Judge , Judge Publishing Company, New York, 1899 drawn by Victor Gillam clearly represents the imperialism era. Imperialism is a word that stands for the set of practices involving the extension of authority and control of one state or people over another or a political doctrine that justifies the domination of one people or state over others. On this cartoon, we can see two men. The first one is wearing white and red which are the colors of the cross on Grand Britain flag. The second one is wearing a stripped red and white pants and a hat also stripped with those colors and stars on a blue background, elements that reminds us of the United States’ flag. Both men are carrying a basket filled with uncivilized people. On one hand, the people carried by the British man, as we can see labelled on the cartoon, are from India, Africa and China which are territories where Britain had colonies or in the case of India that was as a whole a colony. On the other hand, the man representing the U.S is carrying people from Africa, Cuba, Hawaii and the Filipins. Here, it is important to highlight the fact that Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Filipins are territories that belonged to the Spanish Empire prior to signing the Treaty of Paris that concluded with the Spanish-American War in 1898.^1 The way this two men are using is defined by rocks labelled with words such as “ignorance”, “vice”, “ignorance”, “oppression”, “slavery”… representing what those people got through once colonized. Also, on the first step of this way, located at the bottom on the right, we can see the word “barbarism” and at the very end a woman sitting on a throne with the word civilization written above her. these people that are “barbar” and ignorant. In fact, imperialism is based on the idea that the white race has to civilize the non-white of our planet, and to encourage their progress (economic, social, and cultural) through colonialism. Similarly, I think that the man representing Britain is ahead of the American because he is guiding the American representing the fact that America used to be a British colony. The title of this cartoon is also meaningful ( “The white man’s burden” ) since it symbolizes the fact that the white- race has a duty towards the uncivilized people. Finally, it is important to point that colonialism destroys the national identity of people since the colonizers impose theirs. The cartoon “inspector of buildings” refers to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that took place March 25, 1911 and portraits a skeleton dressed as a building inspector. The fact that he is depicted as a monster illustrates that he didn’t complete his job correctly because the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was far from being a safe place in the case a fire gets to happen. In the same way, the inspector of building depicted as a monster can also point a connotation to death since many workers died in that fire, 146 of them were women^2. Indeed, after these events Frances Perkins was convinced that it was a must improving working conditions for everyone. 3 As those events took place in the late Progressive Era (1895-1920), era characterized by the idea that governments should solve problems and serve the public interest, many reforms where implemented. The fire led to legislation requiring improved factory safety standards, the New York Factory Investment committee was created and represented an example to the rest of the nation. indirectly created an incentive for black people to migrate to the north since many work positions were available as the whites by who they were occupied went fighting in the war. 7 As a result, the white southerners who oppressed black southerners realized how black workers were ‘useful’ to them since their labor was cheap. Thus, “ they tried to prevent African Americans from hearing about northern opportunities ”^8 by banning northern black newspapers or stopping trains.^9 In fact, these events illustrate the conflictive racism active during the twentieth century in the United States. Indeed, the Second Ku Klux Klan (1915-1944) motivated the movement known as “New Negro”. Besides, it is important to point that the silent film The Birth of a Nation , which was the first movie ever played in the White House, was an inspiration to the Klan. Controversially, this movie was the cause of several riots since it portrayed black people as monster spreading a bad incentive and provoking more oppression towards colored people. In fact, when the film arrived to Boston William Monroe Trotter, a Boston-based journalist and civil-rights activist, led the opposition that mobilized against it, unfortunately, without success. For the first time, he was unable to censure this movie. It is during this era when we see a rise of strong patriotism and nationalism movements in the United States. (^7) Gilmore and Sugrue, 97.
