TERM 1
Sensation
DEFINITION 1
conscious or unconscious awareness of external or internal
stimuli.
TERM 2
Superficial Sensation
DEFINITION 2
includes touch, temperature, pain, etc from the surface of the
body. Includes two point discrimination. We also call these
sensations extero receptive sensations.
TERM 3
Two point discrimination
DEFINITION 3
there are more sensory receptors in the hand as opposed to
the upper arm. allows a person to feel more in the hand that
in the arm.
TERM 4
Deep Sensation
DEFINITION 4
this includes muscle fascia, bone and joint pain, vibration
and proprioception. We call these sensations interoreceptive
sensations.
TERM 5
proprioception
DEFINITION 5
this is the detection of muscle and joint position and muscle
and joint movement couples with equilibrium.

Sensation

conscious or unconscious awareness of external or internal stimuli. TERM 2

Superficial Sensation

DEFINITION 2 includes touch, temperature, pain, etc from the surface of the body. Includes two point discrimination. We also call these sensations extero receptive sensations. TERM 3

Two point discrimination

DEFINITION 3 there are more sensory receptors in the hand as opposed to the upper arm. allows a person to feel more in the hand that in the arm. TERM 4

Deep Sensation

DEFINITION 4 this includes muscle fascia, bone and joint pain, vibration and proprioception. We call these sensations interoreceptive sensations. TERM 5

proprioception

DEFINITION 5 this is the detection of muscle and joint position and muscle and joint movement couples with equilibrium.

perception

conscious awareness and interpretation of sensations. TERM 7

sensory modality

DEFINITION 7 property by which one sensation is distinguished from another TERM 8

general senses

DEFINITION 8 include both somatic and visceral senses. the somatic senses are touch, pressure, vibration, itch, tickle, warmth, cold and pain arising in receptors located in the skin plus proprioception. The visceral senses come from internal organs. For example, baroreceptors ( detect pressure). Stretching of the organ is another type of visceral sense. TERM 9

Aortic Arch and the Common Carotid

Artery

DEFINITION 9 What are the two main arteries in which baroreceptors are found? TERM 10

special senses

DEFINITION 10 include smell (olfactory), taste (gustation), vision, hearing (auditory), and equilibrium. Receptors for these sensations are often located in organs such as nose, eyes, ears, tongue, etc.

Third Order

Neuron

A sensory neuron that conducts nerve impulses, action potentials from the thalamus up to the somato-sebory cortex on the post-central gyrus of the parietal lobe. This is where the conscious perception of the sensation is elicited. TERM 17

Astereognosis

DEFINITION 17 the inability to judge the shape/forms of objects. TERM 18

Free Nerve

Endings

DEFINITION 18 found everywhere in the skin. can detect pain, temperature, itch, tickle, touch, pressure and stretch. others detect mechanical deformation. they are bare dendrites, not covered/noncapsulated. TERM 19

Encapsulated Nerve Ending

DEFINITION 19 are the dendrites of first order neurons found in non-hairy parts of the skin particularly the lips, fingertips, palms. They can detect well developed touch, pressure and vibrations. TERM 20

Separate Cells

DEFINITION 20 synapse with first order neurons located in sense organs; the hair cells in the ears, the rods and cones in the retina and gustatory receptor cells for taste on the taste buds.

exteroreceptors

located at or near the body surface. Provide info about external environment such as hearing, vision, smell, taste, touch, pressure, vibration, pain, & temperature. TERM 22

Interoceptors or Visceroreceptors

DEFINITION 22 located in blood vessels and the viscera. provide info about internal environment. TERM 23

Proprioceptors or Stretch Receptors

DEFINITION 23 located in muscles, tendons, joints, and the internal ear and are stimulated by stretching or movement. They provide information about body position, muscle tension, joint position, & equilibrium.
