After you have completed the instrument on androgyny, compute your scores then take some time to think about your results. Then write a paper incorporating the answers to the following questions. What are some of the specific qualities associated with each gender that you would most like in yourself? What did your father teach you about being a man or a woman? What did your mother teach you about being a man or a woman? How do you think that your culture has influenced your view of your gender-role identity? What does the concept of androgyny mean to you? Discuss your comfort or discomfort with your final scores. What does it mean to you to be the man or woman you are now or are becomming? What difficulties do you foresee in living your life as a man or a woman within and outside of the societal expectations? Look over my summary of Deborah Tannen’s (1990) famous work about the ways men and women converse. How well do you fit the stereotype of your gender? Does your conversation reflect Tannen’s portrayal of your gender? One last task. Ask a small child – ages 3 to 6 – what they want to do when they grow up. How does their answer relate or not relate to stereotypes of gender? What would gender typing expect a girl to say? What would gender typing expect a boy to say? What were the child’s actual responses to your questions? Have the child draw a picture of himself/herself. What can you surmise from the picture?
