Lesson 30 : Batok; Art of the Tattoo
ASSESSMENT 1: (15 points)
1. What are the meaning and significance of tattoos during the pre- historic
period or early colonial period?
1. Symbolism is part and parcel of pre colonial Filipino warrior
culture. A certain clothing, tattoo or cicatrix may connote the wearer’s
status in warrior society. Tattooing was widely practiced in pre-
colonial Philippines both for the purposes of ornamentation and rite
of passage. This was particularly well-known in the Visayas and
among the highland tribes of Northern Luzon. So widespread was
the practice of tattooing in the Visayas that the Spaniards coined the
Visayas because their body is covered by tattoos. (Manila Times)
2. What are the meaning and significance of tattoos in our modern time?
Today, people choose to be tattooed for artistic, cosmetic,
sentimental/memorial, religious and magical reasons to symbolize
their belonging to or identification with particular groups, including
criminal gangs or a particular ethnic group or law-abiding subculture.
In the Philippines certain tribal groups believe tattoo have magical
qualities and help to protect their bearers. Most traditional tattooing
in the country is related to bearer’s accomplishment in life or rank in
the tribe. (Uber, 2015)
3. What are the factors that can be attributed to the dying art of “BATOK” ?
The country has indeed a great cultural diversity. Even before the
coming of Spaniards and other colonizer, the ancestors have their
indigenous art already that is evident to the culture. Batok is believed
to have been practiced for one thousand years already. Unlike today,
tattooing in ancient time is not done for money. The tribes people of
Kalinga are headhunters, they customarily practice headhunting,
making it one of the main reason behind tattooing. (Pongpong, 2019)
4. Why have tattoos become so popular today?

  4. Why have tattoos become so popular today?

It is not surprising that tattoos have become more and more popular once again. This is because they are being worn in public figures such as celebrities, athletes and people within the fashion industry. But another important aspect to acknowledge is the activism and awareness-building done by the community of tattoo artists. There are also organizations born in the country. Promoting the art of tattooing and to protect the people with tattoos from the public discriminations. (Asis, 2018) ACTIVITY 1: (18 POINTS)

  1. Why many people still get tattoos despite of the religious prohibition? People believe that tattooing is a way to express thoughts, the ideas that are cannot be said. Others use it as a sign of membership within a particular group. I think that people still get tattoos despite of the religious prohibition is because they are not aware of this religious prohibition. They lack information that this practice is against the religious matters. Or maybe others know this prohibition but just ignore it.
  2. Are body tattoos unhealthy? Why? When you received a tattoo, a tattoo artists uses a handheld machine with an attached needle to puncture the skin. Everytime this device makes a hole, it injects ink into the dermis which is the second layer of the skin below the epidermis. Tattoos can damage skin and cause skin complications such as allergic reaction, skin infection, swelling, keloids or tetanus. (Higuera, 2020)
  3. Are tattoos sign of mental illness? Why? No, because people with tattoos believed that this is their way of communicating. They use tattoos to express their thoughts which they never said. If tattooing helps them in expressing themselves, I see no problem about this practice. Thoughts and opinions that are kept in mind will cause stress and depression which is the real mental illness.
  4. What can you say today about a person with body tattoos especially women? I am a Bible believer and I am against this practice. But if people are happy about what they do and they do not harm anybody, I will choose to let them live the life they want or do the things they want. Because everyone has its own belief. But I hope they should not tattoo their bodies the way they will be misinterpreted.
  5. Are tattoos art or Self destruction? Define your answer?
