The Importance of Respiratory monitoring Introduction Respiratory rate is one of the first vital signs that effectively predicts the patient's physiological state. The respiratory rate determines patient improvement, evaluates the therapeutic response, and indicates when patients need to increase their level of care. It provides information on clinical deterioration and predicts cardiac arrest. When respiratory rate changes, it is indicative that the patient is having trouble maintaining homeostasis or control of the body's internal environment. to change when the body has a problem, and prompt intervention when indicators suggest that a patient is deteriorating improves patient outcomes. Summary of Article This article examines the challenges associated with respiratory rate monitoring, to include that healthcare professionals do not prioritize measuring respiratory rate due to a lack of knowledge. Another concern would be drawing the patient's attention to their breathing, creating conscious control, thus disrupting the patient's breathing pattern (Rolfe, 2019). Additionally, health professionals need to be aware that a change in the respiratory rate of a patient could be a potential sign of deterioration; hence, the recommendation for the use of a National Early Warning Score (NEWS) to encourage the monitoring of the trends in respiratory rate for a patient.
