1. Explain with reasons was it external environmental change that caused the problems for Maggi or was
there some internal environmental issues?
Answer: There were multiple factors which cased this problem for Maggi, both external and internal.
External factors are beyond organization control such as Social media influencers, Political view etc.,
however Internal factors are something which organization can control.
According to punctuated equilibrium theory companies go through long periods of stability during which
incremental changes occur followed by short complex period of dynamic change with return to stability.
The internal factors issues include the lack of hygiene and un-favorable ingredients that enhance the taste
of Maggi. While considering the external environmental facts, the Maggi ban was due to the lack of skilled
people who could understand the issue and work on crisis management. (Resource Scarcity) FSSAI
discovered excessive levels of lead and monosodium glutamate in Maggi. People all over social media
started the hash tag #ban Maggi. (Product Boycott). But they got auto tweets and retweets by Maggie as
response which agitated them. Learning and research from past crisis by other organizations or groups
could have helped.
2. Explain whether adequate plans beforehand could have helped Maggi to anticipate the problem. Justify
your answer.
Answer: They could have kept themselves updated about the market condition and learnings from the
past crisis faced by other organizations. Adequate media management could have added to avoid such
crisis. Regular interactions with the customers could have been an advantage.
According to me, Nestle could have planned beforehand in the following ways:-
1. Acknowledge the issue- Nestle could have acknowledge the issue as soon as it appeared in the news
and social media and shown that they believe in their product.
2. Invest in the Consumer
Since the writing on the wall is clear, they could have done a temporary stop-sale of the product till it is
proven that the product is safe to preserve 30 years of goodwill and future sales.
3. Root cause analysis
Deep dive into the issue and finding route cause could have helped. They could have run the lab test
themselves by an independent body to prove their side.

  1. “SWOT analysis is actually not an analysis but a list of items. It does not help in making strategies. VRIN is a better method”. Give your opinion in favor or against the statement taking the context from the Maggi issue. Answer: Every organization should do a “SWOT” analysis to understand the companies “Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat”. On the other hand the VRIN Framework (Value, Rare, Imitate and Exploited by Organization) to analyze the competitive advantages work to improve weaknesses and build their value. Both analyses go hand in hand and would complement each other. Each finding could have helped the company in multiple smaller or large aspects. Nestle could have done a swot analysis and understood their strength, weaknesses, competitors and could have made few sub products and promoted them before the crisis. This could have given them a chance that the claim can be biased. They would have had a point that it was only Maggi and might be an error in only that batch. The management could have stepped and created a threat analysis. But deeply working to avoid issues could have been done with VRIN. When there are multiple flavor or variant given by competitors Nestle could have had multiple variants of Maggi. They could have predicted their vulnerability earlier. As far as MAGGI is concerned, VRIN should have given a better picture because had Nestle known the right value of their product in the market then they would have responded with a better concern to Maggi issue.
  2. Give your idea regarding what management principle(s) Maggi can use to avoid such issues in the future. Answer: There was lack of leadership and appropriate management who could speak up for the brand. As per my opinion Fayol’s Fourteen Principles could have helped. Few of which that could have helped are mentioned here: Division of Work: PR team should have taken initiative to understand and work on media work. Media management team could have work with management and PR to help giving proper content. Authority: Rights to give proper order should be communicated Discipline: Clear rules and procedures in place during crisis. Unity of direction: One motto Centralization: There can be a balance in centralization based on circumstances. Order: No overlapping responsibilities Initiative: Management can open ideas from employee to solve the issue. Esprit de corps: There should be strong sense of morale implunged on the employee. Documentation of error and rectification methods could be helpful
