the Registrar’s Office): EDUC 250
2. Full course title: Introduction to Instructional Technology
3. Catalog description: Theory and pedagogy of using technology for instruction in all areas of
the preK-12 curriculum. Develops the understanding and skills necessary to confidently plan for,
implement, and evaluate effective integration of technology across the curriculum, as well as the
use of technology to enhance personal productivity.
4. Prerequisites (if any): EDUC 205 (Foundations of Education)
5. Units: .5
6. Estimate of student enrollment: 12-14
7. By whom and when the course will be offered (e.g., whether every year, alternate years,
summer session): Dr. Karen Kellison, every semester
8. Staffing implications (regarding any need for additional staff, overloads, reassignments, and
changes in the staffing of general education and other courses): no additional staffing required
9. Adequacy of library, technology, and other resources (to be previewed and certified by the
appropriate staff members from the library, computer services, etc.): current materials are
adequate
10. Relation to existing courses and curricula in other departments, programs, and schools (to be
discussed with these units prior to submission): none

12. Purpose and rationale for the course (including evidence of student interest, and how the
course relates to the department or program curriculum): The current course students take,
Technology Enhanced Curriculum, will be scaled back to cover introductory skills in the use of
technology for instructional purposes. Students will take the new course earlier in the program so
that they develop these skills early enough to be able to use them in upper division education
courses.

  1. Brief outline of the course (detailing the topics to be covered): Through practical applications of the appropriate use of instructional technologies and upon completion of this course, students will be prepared not only to meet state mandated Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel (8 VAC 20-25-30). These standards are incorporated into course requirements and assignment objectives. The state mandated technology standards indicate instructional personnel shall be able to:
    • Demonstrate effective use of a computer system and utilize computer software.
    • Apply knowledge of terms associated with educational computing and technology.
    • Apply computer productivity tools for professional use.
    • Use electronic technologies to access and exchange information.
    • Identify, locate, evaluate, and use appropriate instructional hardware and software to support Virginia's Standards of Learning and other instructional objectives.
    • Use educational technologies for data collection, information management, problem solving, decision-making, communication, and presentation within the curriculum.
    • Plan and implement lessons and strategies that integrate technology to meet the diverse needs of learners in a variety of educational settings.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of ethical and legal issues relating to the use of technology.
