Random Team Assignment: Server Security
Our text is out of date. To add to our understanding of current security issues and solutions, four
randomly selected groups within the class will cover the topics below on Thursday 4/16.
Each randomly selected team will present their topic to the class and submit a paper summarizing their
findings and their presentation.
Grades will focus on the following:
- Completeness: How thoroughly was the topic researched and presented?
- Professionalism: Did the team do a professional presentation and submit a professional report?
- Balance: All team members contributed equally to the effort.
- Interactivity: Did the team involve the class in the presentation of their topic?
- Applicability: The topic presented was current and useful information for a server administrator.
Topics:
A. Identify and explain some of the latest security issues and approaches facing server
administrators today. Include Extrusion Detection as one of your topics.
B. Explore the scale and complexity of email spam today. Explain some of the current approaches
to handling spam. Include greylisting in the approaches you investigate.
C. Give a detailed explanation of how public key cryptography works today.
D. Explain in detail different filtering techniques used by firewalls today. Examine the advantages
and disadvantages to the various techniques.
Due date: Thursday 4/16/09 – Be prepared to present to the class.
