SEMESTER 4 - JULY 2020

Question 1 Draw a semi-monocoque fuselage and a wing with a front and rear spar.

Assume the aircraft has a pressurised fuselage. Components necessary for a

satisfactory structural arrangement must include:

  • a windscreen;
  • at least one door cut-out;
  • method of wing attachment;
  • at least two primary flight control surfaces;
  • empennage arrangement and method of empennage attachment.

On the drawing, include and clearly label:

  • frames;
  • stringers;
  • longerons;
  • ribs;
  • spars;
  • any flight controls included.

Please note:

Artistic ability is not being assessed.

Your drawing will be judged on the structure you have designed for your aircraft.

Question 2 You are to assume some damage has been done to your aircraft.

Pick one of the following scenarios and write a brief report on the extent of the damage:

  • damage to the fuselage immediately underneath the door cut-out;
  • damage to wingtip, not affecting any flight controls;
  • damage to rear fuselage in the vicinity of the rear pressure bulkhead.

In your report:

  • detail the extent of damage (make up your own dimensions);
  • quote the exact damage location (make this up, but use fuselage stations, water lines

etc.);

  • make recommendations for repair including any further inspections required;
  • make note of all references to be used (Structural Repair Manual etc.).
