Transition to sitting

DEFINITION 7 patient can assist significantly must maintain proper balance and body mechanics to serve as counter weight client must be able to tolerate a long sitting position and be free from any back conditions can assist from sidelying to sit or "flat-spin" or "scoop" method if additional personnel there, use them for safety if patient is unable to help TERM 8

If client can assist when sitting, what should

they do?

DEFINITION 8 place patient in sidelying with knees bent have them use upper extremities to push on bed let arms walk patient up in bed while simultaneously having the patient's legs move down towards the floor have patients feet supported by floor or stool arms supported by pillows, recommended to never have hanging unless treating support head forward on plinth with towel folded if client is in the chair TERM 9

General Rules for positioning

never compromise technique or safety

always remember to communicate and ask permission or

consent

always have the patient help if it is safe to do so

use equipment that you have access to

if patient is dependent use more personnel or life

equipment

TERM 10

How to properly drape a patient

DEFINITION 10 have client remove clothing if necessary offer a drape or private area to change and offer gown or other article for client to use be cautious on how and where you tuck your drape have client assist with placement ask for permission and for depending on patient area and gender of patient, be sure to find out the patient's preference
