Activity 1: Case Study
Directions: For this case, first justify your decision using
duty-oriented reasoning and then following using
consequence-oriented reasoning.
As a local pharmacist, you have known the Smith family for years
and considers them friends as well as customers and clients. Missy
Smith has always been a favorite of yours and you have watched
her grow into a pretty 13 years old. One day when no other
customers are present. Missy ask you for a pregnancy kit and pleads
with you not to tell her family that she is sexually active.
Duty – oriented Reasoning:
As a professional pharmacist, I will provide the client needs
even when he or she is a minor. So, I will give the pregnancy kit to
Missy Smith. I will keep this matter confidential since Missy asked
me not to tell her family about this.
Consequence – oriented Reasoning:
I will not be allowed to disclose the information to her family. I
have to respect Missy as it is her right as a client. But I have to give
her advices or options about the value of parental support and
encourage her to inform her parents about the consultation while
assuring her that confidentiality will be maintained.
