Blood can be collected from antecubital vein on the forearm and finger It can be collected through syringe and needle / vacuum tube Venous blood is preferred
Vein should be easily accessible
Site should be cleaned with 70% IPA and not touched afterwards
tourniquet should be used 3-4 inches above site. Patient should make a fist
Hang down the arm and gently slapping the arm also works
clean hands and information on tube
keep the cap on until used and check the syringe
Keep the needle up and puncture the skin n a parallel way appearance of blood on the hub of the needle indicates that needle has successfully entered the vein
tourniquet should be removed
withdraw the piston slowly and apply pressure over the puncture site
release the blood inside the receiver and cap it
Destroy the needle
In adults capillary blood sample can be obtained from the lateral side of tip of the 3rd or 4th finger
For Infants,the sample can be obtained by a deep puncture of the plantar surface of the heel.
samples can be used for making peripheral blood films ,performing hematocrit/Hb and point of care testing
