7. BOUYANCY TANKS: COPPER OR PLASTIC TANKS FITTED IN

THE BOW AND STERN OF SOME BOATS TO INCREASE THEIR

RESERVE OF BUOYANCY.

8. CANOPY: A WOODEN,FABRIC OR GRP COVERING, USUALLY

DETACHABLE, FITTED OVER PARTS OF A BOAT FOR THE

PROTECTION OF PASSENGERS, CREW AND ENGINE.

9. CAPPING: A STRIP OF WOOD FITTED TO THE TOP OF THE

GUNWALE TO STRENGTHEN AND PROTECT IT.

10. CENTRE PLATE OR DROP KEEL: A METAL PLATE WHICH

CAN BE LOWERED THROUGH A SLOT IN THE KEEL SO THAT

IT PROJECTS BELOW THE BOAT AND THUS REDUCES HER

LEEWAY WHEN UNDER SAIL.

11. COAMING: RAISED SURROUNDING OF A HATCH, TO KEEP

OUT WATER.

14. FLOOR BOARDS: REMOVABLE PLANKS OR GRATINGS

WHICH FORM A HORIZONTAL PLATFORM OVER THE BOTTOM

OF THE BOAT.

15. FOOTRAIL: A STRIP OF WOOD FITTED ALONG THE TOP OF

THE GUNWALE OF DECKED-IN BOATS TO PROTECT THE

GUNWALE AND PROVIDE A FOOTHOLD.

16. GRATINGS: IN ADDITION TO THE FLOOR BOARDS, THEY

ARE USED TO COVER OTHER SPACES IN A BOAT.

17. GUDGEON AND PINTLES: THE FITTINGS BY WHICH THE

RUDDER IS HUNG AND PIVOTED TO THE STERN POST. THE

PINTLES ARE VERTICAL PINS AND THE GUDGEONS ARE

HORIZONTAL EYEBOLTS IN WHICH THE PINTLES FIT.

24. MAST STEP AND CLAMP: THE FOOT OF A BOAT’S MAST

FITS INTO A WOOD OR METAL SLOT IN THE KEELSON

CALLED THE MAST STEP. THE MAST IS HELD TO A THWART

BY A MAST CLAMP.

25. PLUG: A METAL PLUG WHICH FITS IN A HOLE BORED IN

ONE OF THE LOWER STRAKES FOR DRAINING THE BOAT

WHEN SHE IS HOISTED.

26. RING BOLTS: FITTED IN THE STEM AND STERN TO TAKE

THE FORE AND AFT LEGS OF THE SLINGS WHEN THE BOAT

IS HOISTED.

27. RUBBERS: STRIP OF WOOD EXTENDING FROM THE STEM

TO THE STERN POST BELOW THE GUNWALE. IT

STRENGTHEN THE TOP STRAKES.

28. RUDDER: IT IS FITTED AT THE STERN OF THE BOAT, WHEN

TURNED TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER ALTERS THE COURSE

OF THE BOAT.

29. STEM: THE FORE MOST VERTICAL MEMBER OF THE HULL.

30. STERN: THE AFTER MOST PART OF THE HULL.

31. STRETCHERS: ADJUSTABLE WOODEN BARS FITTED

ATHWART THE BOTTOM BOARDS TO PROVIDE FOOTRESTS

FOR THE OARSMEN.

32. THWART : BENCHES FITTED ATHWART THE BOAT ON

WHICH THE OARSMEN SIT.

33. TIMBERS: CURVED PIECES OF WOOD WHICH EXTEND

UPWARD AND OUTWARD FROM THE KEEL AT SHORT

INTERVALS THROUGHOUT ITS LENGTH AND FORM THE RIBS

OF THE BOAT.

34. RISINGS: THE STRINGERS WHICH SUPPORT THE ENDS OF

THE THWARTS.

35. TOWING BOLLARD: A STOUT POST OF TIMBER, CLAMPED

TO A STRONGBACK, SHIPPED BETWEEN THE GUNWALES;

BY WHICH A BOAT IS TOWED.

E, PO GW MANNING THE PULLING BOAT CREW SHOULD BE DETAILED BEFORE MANNING THE BOATS FOR THEIR RESPECTIVE THWARTS i.e. BOW MAN, NO 3 AND STROKE MAN PULL ON THE STBD SIDE AND SIT ON PORT SIDE AND NO. 2 AND 4 SIT ON STBD SIDE AND PULL ON THE PORT SIDE. WHILE MANNING THE BOAT, CREW TO AVOID STEPPING ON THE GUNWALE AND THWARTS. EACH OARS MAN SHOULD SIT SQUARELY AND UPRIGHT ON HIS THWART. HIS STRETCHER SHOULD BE ADJUSTED, KNEE SLIGHTLY BENT, HEELS TOGETHER TOE TURNED OUTWARDS AT AN ANGLE OF 45 DEGREE, OARS TO BE HELD WITH THE HAND 30 TO 50 CM APART, GRIP TO BE FIRM BUT LIGHT, BOTH ELBOW SHOULD BE CLOSE TO THE SIDE AND BACK STRAIGHT.

4. GIVE WAY TOGETHER: THIS IS THE ORDER TO

START PULLING AND IS OBEYED TOGETHER BY

ALL CREWS.

5. OARS: THIS IS THE ORDER TO CEASE / STOP

PULLING.

6. EASY ON YOUR OARS: THIS ORDER IS TO

ALLOW THE CREWS TO RELAX FROM THE

POSITION OF OARS.

7. ESSAY ALL: THIS IS THE ORDER TO PULL

LESS VIGOROUSLY SO THAT THE SPEED OF THE

BOAT WILL BE REDUCED.

8. MIND YOURS OARS: THIS IS A WARNING TO THE

CREW TO KEEP THE BLADES OF THEIR OARS

CLEAR OF SOME OBSTRUCTION.

9. EYE IN THE BOAT: THIS IS AN ORDER TO THE

CREWS TO PAY ATTENTION TO THEIR DUTIES.

10. BOW: THIS IS AN ORDER FOR THE BOW MAN TO

STOP PULLING AND BOAT HIS OARS.

11. WAY ENOUGH: THIS IS AN ORDER WHICH IS GIVEN TO

STOP PULLING THE BOATS , SPECIALLY WHEN GOING

ALONG SIDE.

12. BACK TOGETHER: THIS IS THE ORDER TO BACK

WATER TOGETHER BY PUSHING ON THE LOOM OF THE

OARS INSTEAD OF PULLING, IF ONLY ONE SIDE IS

REQUIRED TO BACK WATER THE ORDER , BACK STBD

OR BACK PORT IS GIVEN.

13. HOLD WATER: THIS IS THE ORDER TO REDUCE OR

STOP THE WAY OF THE BOAT BY HOLDING THE OARS

AT RIGHT ANGLE WITH THEIR BLADE DIPPED IN WATER.
