You will be required to successfully complete Professional Ethical and Legal Issues in Healthcare which is offered every trimester before progressing through the remainder of the programme detailed below. You may be exempt from this module if you have evidenced study of a diploma in Nursing to FHEQ 5. After successfully completing Professional, Ethical and Legal and Issues in Healthcare you can then enrol on up to two modules per trimester, where available.

Healthy Lives (20 credits) As detailed above, depending on your previous level of study you will be required to successfully complete either five or six modules for the award of BSc Nursing Studies. Depending on your pace of study and module availability you can complete the programme in between 12 and 28 months. The above is the indicative schedule for module delivery and some changes may occur between now and the time that you commence your studies.
In this module you will be introduced to ethical theories and principles relevant to health care; these include the ethics of care, values-based care and the bioethical principles. Other topics addressed in the module are responsibility and accountability, professional regulation, record keeping, consent, confidentiality, patient rights, restraint, and do-not-attempt cardio pulmonary resuscitation (DNACPR). Adults with incapacity and other related issues, such as, the use and abuse of power, and advocacy will also be considered. You will have the opportunity to explore and apply creative solutions to ethical situations in the healthcare environment and will be encouraged to participate in online discussions and reflection on practice. Engagement with learning, teaching and assessment activities throughout the module will help you develop your academic skills. At Edinburgh Napier University we value the student experience therefore specific academic sessions tailored to your programme will be also be offered to further develop you as an effective learner. These sessions will help you to develop your academic study skills and increase your confidence.
Promoting Excellence in Older People’s Health
This module will help you explore the theories of ageing from a physical, psychological, social and cultural aspect. Older people and health care will be contextualised from a local and world-wide perspective and include exploration of the value of nursing theories when assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care.
You will be encouraged to use health care related policies, legislation and strategies, both local and international, to examine the importance of individualised approaches to meeting the often complex healthcare needs of older people within communities and globally - as well as examine the impact of the ageing population on health related services.
The module will utilise a strengths based approach to working with older people to maximise independence and promote self-care. You will have the opportunity to explore contemporary practice by using case examples and vignettes to embed and apply theories and concepts relating to older peoples care.
Management of Chronic Disease
This module will encourage you to explore medical and social models of care, health outcomes, information and support, psychological consequences of chronic disease, social issues, cultural and spiritual issues.
Self-management strategies including the “Expert Patient” Programme, enabling role, partnership working will form part of your studies and offer you opportunities to explore these in the context of your own practice.
Ethical issues, patient choice, advocacy and values based practice will underpin the units of study in this module and how it links to your practice.
Advancing Practice through Research
This module will provide you with the opportunity to learn about the different types of evidence that may be used to inform clinical practice. Specifically, you will explore different approaches to undertaking the research process, research methods and will have the opportunity to develop your skills to critique research and its relevance to practice.
You will learn how to interpret statistical analyses and qualitative data analysis. You will reflect on the ethical and professional implications of research and you will also consider factors which promote or hinder the implementation of evidence to practice. This will enable you to focus on dissemination and communication of evidence in practice.
