ANALYSIS OF THE CASE:

 “Ms. B reported that she was reluctant to accept the position because it required frequent interactions with employees from other divisions of the company, as well as occasional public speaking.” In Social Anxiety Disorder, the social situations are avoided or endured with intense fear or anxiety. There is fear and anxiety that is around possible negative evaluation by others on specific social situations like “occasional public speaking”. It is very evident that the client also shows the symptoms of social anxiety disorder.  “She stated that she had always felt nervous around new people, whom she worried would ridicule her for “saying stupid things” or committing social faux pas. She also reported feeling “terrified” to speak before groups.” The client fears that she will act in a way or show anxiety symptoms that will be negatively evaluated (i.e., will be humiliating or embarrassing; will lead to rejection or offend others). This shows that she feels that others will make fun of her or be judged by others in her workplace.  These fears had not previously interfered with her social life and job performance. However, since starting her probationary job, Ms. B reported that they had become problematic. The fear, anxiety, or avoidance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning_._ This reveals that her anxiety is affecting her occupation as it is not being “problematic” according to her. It is thus, affecting her job performance as well.  She noted that when she had to interact with others, her heart started racing, her mouth became dry, and she felt sweaty. These are typical somatic symptoms of social anxiety disorder and here, it indicates that the individual is experiencing these physical symptoms due to the fear of social situation (i.e., interacting with others)  “At meetings, she had sudden thoughts that she would say something very foolish or commit a terrible social gaffe that would cause people to laugh. As a consequence, she had skipped several important meetings and left others early.” The individual fears that he or she will act in a way or show anxiety symptoms that will be negatively evaluated. This also reveals that she tends to avoid social situations due to her anxiety. Based on the symptoms found in the case and on the diagnostic criteria of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders -5 (DSM -5), I conclude that Ms. B appears to be suffering from Social Anxiety Disorder or Social Phobia (DSM- 300.2)
