Linkage with other walkways One possible solution to fix the walkability problem in cities is to ensure that every walkway is able to in some way connect with others to allow access to other areas easily. One problem that walkers have to deal with are crossing streets and railways to get to their destination. If there is no connection between a walkway on one side of a road or railway or the other, the walker is in danger of being struck by a car or impeding traffic. Linkage with other modes of transportation One way to improve the lives of city dwellers is to make public transportation easier and safer to use. This can be enhanced by ensuring that public transportation, like buses, trains, subways, and other transportation, is accessible to everyone easily. By connecting walkways to all modes of transportation, one is now able to navigate the entire system. This would mean a change to most cities infrastructure’s, but doing so will allow people ease of life and also protect the lives of its inhabitants.
15-minute cities The idea of a 15-minute city is a city where almost anything a person could need is within a 15 minute walk of where they live. This means that there would be grocery stores, schools, doctor’s offices, restaurants, shopping centers, and more all within 15 minutes of walking. Doing this allows people to not heavily rely on their cars for transportation, as it would be too much of a hassle to get in the car to drive somewhere that is within walking distance. This also will help reduce carbon emissions to better protect our environment. Transit-oriented design This design focuses on making public transportation the number one priority in a city. It makes it accessible, safe, and easy for everyone, that taking a car or other mode of transportation seems like a worse option. It uses transport engineering, landscapers, and urban planners to make solutions that make public transportation the number one option, and keeps it sustainable so that it can be used for many years to come.
Rework of layouts Cities were originally made for people to walk through before cars were around. Since cars have dominated streets and integrated its way into cities, walking got pushed to the side. Cars were able to do this because of a change in the infrastructure of cities. There was much work done to
allow cars access to all corners of cities. If we want to make walking the main priority again, it makes sense to rework the streets and walkways to a way that puts walkers first, instead of cars. Open-source tools One way to figure out if cities are walkable, is to use open-source tools to scope out what each city has within walking distance. Open-source tools are desktop software that users can use to input data of the cities they live in. One example of an open-source tool is the OS-WALK-EU, which is used in European cities. When the tool is running, it can show you a map and outputs of what you are looking for. Using this, people can find cities that fit their needs, but can also be used to make a city realize what it is missing.
Alleys One of the problems with walkability is the fact that most sidewalks are directly next to busy roads. Many people feel unsafe when walking on sidewalks especially if there are cars going 35+ mph a few feet from them. This is even worse when the sidewalk is narrow and not much footing. One solution to this is to fix and rework alleys. Alleys are typically even scarier than normal sidewalks, but prioritizing the remodeling of them to become safe, accessible, and easy to use can make walking in a city much better, Sidewalk and road intersections When people are trying to cross a street, it can be hard especially if there aren’t proper street lights, crosswalks, and pedestrian signals. If a city doesn’t have these, crossing the street can be very dangerous and a grueling task. If a city does have these, it can still be a struggle to always protect yourself while walking. There are cars impatiently waiting to drive again and a limited amount of time to cross the street. One way to fix issues of pedestrian accidents in a city, if they are occurring, is to increase the pedestrian countdown, and to have designated times when only walkers can cross while all cars are stationary.
Openness One study from China shows that having access to the sky will actually greatly increase students motivation to walk around campuses. Making cities less congested is one way to promote walking and living a healthier lifestyle. Openness in cities allows students to peacefully walk and look at the sky during the day or the stars at night. This makes them enjoy spending time outside, while those in congested cities aren’t gaining anything from their walks around campus. Beautification of walkways One reason people choose not to walk is because they feel uncomfortable to walk in certain areas and aren’t gaining anything from it. A solution to this is to simply clean up and restore the walkways we have now. Adding things like trees and plants to a walkway can greatly improve
