  1. How would developing a WBS alleviate some of the problems that occurred during the first meeting and help Brandon organize and plan the project? The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) defines all the elements of the project in a hierarchical framework and establishes their relationships to the project end item(s) ( Project Management , n.d.). Developing a WBS could significantly help Jamal, and his team organize and plan their 5K-run project more effectively as it would break down the project into smaller, manageable components, such as tasks, deliverables, and work packages. This would help Jamal and Olivia clearly define what needs to be done, who is responsible for each task, and the sequence of activities. For example, they could create specific tasks for theme selection, sponsor recruitment, participant registration, and event logistics. By having a detailed WBS, all team members would have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities. This would reduce confusion and ensure that everyone is on the same page, preventing the free-for-all of ideas and suggestions that occurred during the first meeting. A WBS helps in identifying the resources needed for each task. Jamal and Olivia could allocate resources more effectively, such as assigning specific members to handle the dye procurement, T-shirt design, and website creation. This would ensure that all aspects of the event are covered without overlap or gaps. The WBS would allow the team to set a timeline with specific milestones. This would help in tracking progress and ensuring that the project stays on schedule. For instance, they could set deadlines for finalizing the theme, securing sponsors, and launching the registration website. By breaking down the project into smaller tasks, potential risks can be identified and mitigated early on. For example, they could assess the safety of the dye and plan for any contingencies related to the event’s location. A WBS helps in prioritizing tasks based on their importance and urgency. This would prevent the team from getting sidetracked by less critical issues and ensure that the most important tasks are completed first. By implementing a WBS, Jamal and his team would have a clear roadmap for organizing the 5K-run, making the planning process more efficient and effective.
