Cellular Differentiation

Differentiation

  • Differentiation = cells becoming specialised cell types.
  • All cells in an organism have the same genome therefore differences must be due to which genes are expressed.
  • Unspecialised cells are called stem cells. These cells are undifferentiated.
  • Totipotent stem cell  Pluripotent stem cell  Multipotent stem cell  Committed cell  Differentiated cell

Cancer

  • Cancer cells are graded based on how well differentiated they are.
  • The higher the grade is the LESS differentiated it is.
  • There are many different grading systems but they all follow the basic rule above.
