School

MASCOT

Last school year the Challenger ASB students began researching possible mascots for the school.

■ We didn’t have a mascot! ■ Thought a mascot would be a good addition as the new Challenger was being built.

The Covid shutdown of school stopped the process last year.

HOW WE CHOSE THE RAVEN

The ASB researched several possible mascots and presented these to the Challenger students for their feedback.

The Selection Process

This year the ASB surveyed the students three times. The survey results indicated 77% of our current student body endorsed the recommendation for the Raven as our Mascot based on the information we provided.

The ASB Board voted and endorsed our student’s request. (when did this happen?

The Challenger Site Council unanimously approved the Raven as our potential mascot in May of this year as well.

We are now seeking the approval of the Bethel School Board for Raven as the Challenger mascot.

How We Chose the Raven

The Raven would be a great mascot for us because Challenger is a place that offers students an opportunity to demonstrate their resiliency and to build a connection with their teachers, staff and other classmates.

A safe place for students to learn, grow and achieve success.

Understanding different meanings of the Raven symbol

can help us decipher why the Raven makes its

presence felt in the lives of Challenger students.

Challenger Ravens

Across many cultures, Ravens

symbolize the sun because

their plumage shines so black

and bright that it suggests “an

ability to have survived the

sun.”

Challenger Ravens

■ The Raven symbolizes wisdom, affection, healing powers, resiliency, and longevity. ■ It’s jet black color often represents the night, the great void, or even the Earth. ■ Some believe the Raven brought us to the light ■ This bird is a symbol of mystery, memory, and thought. ■ What other place would these powers be so important than a school like Challenger?

● In Native American lore Raven feathers are iridescent and can
change colors and shape – that symbolizes that people should have
the courage to change as well.
● The black emptiness of the Raven shows that all answers to our
questions are all within us if we look carefully enough.
● The culture at Challenger encourages students to have courage,
learn, and gow. Raven symbolizes these key components of
education.
