Electrical Systems Analysis I: Basic Concepts and Electrical Quantities, Exercises of Circuit Theory

A part of the course materials for inel 3105 – electrical systems analysis i. It covers the fundamental concepts of electrical systems analysis, including the system of units, basic electrical quantities such as current, energy, voltage, and power, and independent sources. Students will learn about the units of measurement, typical magnitudes, and conventions for these electrical quantities, as well as how to calculate energy absorbed and supplied, and voltage and power representations.

What you will learn

  • What are the typical current and voltage magnitudes in electrical circuits?
  • How is power calculated in electrical circuits?
  • What are the basic concepts covered in INEL 3105 – Electrical Systems Analysis I?

Basic Concepts → Chapter

• System of Units

• Basic Electrical Quantities

• Independent & Dependent Sources

• Circuit Analysis

Systeme International des Unites – SI:

• Meter (m)

• Kilogram (Kg)

• Second (s)

• Ampere (A)

• Kelvin (K)

• Candela (cd)

SI - Standard Prefixes

Basic Electrical Quantities → Energy

Energy – ability to do work

Flashlight Circuit

w 𝒕 [J = N∙m ]

Convention:

• Absorbing Energy: positive current

enters the positive terminal

• Supplying Energy: positive current

enters the negative terminal

Energy Supplied Energy Absorbed

Basic Electrical Quantities → Voltage

Voltage (potential) -

  • energy required to move a unit positive charge between to points with an energy level differential
  • difference in energy level of a unit charge located at each of the two points Typical Voltage Magnitudes

Example 1.

Determine the unknown voltage or current.

8

Independent Sources

A two-terminal element that maintains a specified voltage/current between it

terminals regardless of the current through it.

  • Voltage Source • Current Source
