Independent Variable

A condition or event that an experimenter varies in order to see its impact on another variable. It is the variable the experimenter controls or manipulates. It is hypothesized to have some effect on the dependent variable. TERM 7

Dependent Variable

DEFINITION 7 The variable that is thought to be affected by manipulation of the independent variable. TERM 8

Experimental Group

DEFINITION 8 This group consists of subjects who receive some special treatment in regard to the independent variable. TERM 9

Control Group

DEFINITION 9 This group consists of subjects who do not receive the special treatment given to the experimental group. TERM 10

Descriptive/Correlational

DEFINITION 10 allows investigators to see if there is an association between variables of interest

Distortion in Self-Report Data

Most problematic distortion in self-report data is the social desirability bias, which is a tendency to give socially approved answers to questions about oneself. TERM 17
