Character Creation Menu

After choosing to start a new game, the player is brought to the Character Creation Menu. Here the player begins their game by choosing several options to customize their experience. The character creation menu contains six components:  Name allows the player to input any name they choose up to a maximum of 20 characters.  Experience allows the player to choose how difficult they want gameplay to be from 5 levels of difficulty.  Skill allows the player to choose one of five abilities that their avatar excels at.  Start Date allows the player to choose in which of five starting years they want the game to begin.  The Avatar appears alongside the options and is altered by the choices made in the Experience and Skill components.

 The Detail Box gives information on whatever experience, skill, or start date the player is currently holding the cursor over. FunctionalityName: When players first enter the Character Creation Menu, the first thing they must do is type in a name for their avatar. All other options will be grayed out and unable to be altered until this step is completed. The name must be between 1 and 20 characters long. After a name is chosen, there are two ways in which the player may continue with the character creation process: o Clicking the continue button (represented in the screenshot by a dagger) in the lower right hand corner. o Pressing the enter button.  If this is the player’s first time playing : the default settings will be used, and the game will immediately proceed to the next screen. (See character creation cont’d)  If this is not the player’s first time playing : the options below will become visually activated by the text turning from gray to black, and the player will be able to edit them before choosing to continue to the next screen by the same methods listed above. After the player has continued on from the name by pressing the continue button or pressing enter, the only way to resume the name section for editing is by hitting the Esc key. If this happens all other options will be grayed out again until a name has been chosen again.  Experience: The player may choose from five levels of difficulty in the experience section. From easiest to most difficult they are titled apprentice, journeyman, adventurer, rogue, and swashbuckler. By default this is set at the easiest difficulty level. o The player may choose a different experience level by clicking the box next to the corresponding level. An ‘x’ will appear in the box of the currently selected experience level. o While experience is set at the easiest level, the Start Date section is grayed out and unable to be altered. It also forces the player to use the default 1660 start date. o When any of the second through fifth experience levels are selected, the Start Date is able to be altered, and the text in that section is black, not gray. The player may find out more about each level of experience by moving the cursor over it and looking at the detail box. Each level of experience also alters the appearance of the avatar. These changes to the avatar work in conjunction with those of the Skill component.

The player has four choices of which country they want to sail for on this screen. Each choice is represented by an animated captain character.  When the player moves their cursor over one of the four captains, the immediate area is illuminated, and text is displayed directly beneath the captain saying “Sign aboard with the (English, French, Dutch, or Spanish, as corresponds to the captain.)”  The player selects a country by clicking on the corresponding captain.  Once the player selects a country, the captain animates, and the player is taken from character creation into the actual game.
