Character traits:
words that describe character’s personality or qualities that make
them who they are. In other words, how you would describe that character to someone
else.
Things to consider when determining character traits:
Words- What does a character say in the story? What does that tell you about
him/her?
o Example for Up! video: Russel asks Mr. Harrison if they can keep the dog, Doug. One of
Russel’s character traits must be that he is friendly.
Actions- What does a character do in the story? What does that tell you about
him/her?
o Example from Up! video: Mr. Frederickson always backs away from the dog, Doug. One of
Mr. Frederickson’s character traits must be that he is fearful of new situations.
Feelings- What does a character feel in the story? What does that tell you about
him/her?
o Example from Up! video: Doug is happy to see new people when he meets Mr. Frederickson
and Russel. One of Doug’s character traits must be that his is outgoing.
