Christian Denominations Denominations mean different groups within one main group. That means there are many different types of Christian but they all belong to the main group called Christianity. All Christians : a. Believe in one God b. Follow the teachings of Jesus c. Their holy book is called a Bible. Below are some of the denominations : Draw this diagram on paper and under each denomination write out a bit of information about them. Use the information to help you. Christian Denominations Roman Catholics This is the largest Christian Church in the world The Pope at the Vatican in Rome is the head Bishops are said to be successors of the apostles (Jesus’ disciples) Catholics seek forgiveness of sins (confession) Church of England Called the ‘established church’ Quite modern in their view; allow women priests The Queen is the head of the Church Archbishop of Canterbury is the senior leader Have a clergy of vicars Methodists They study the Bible in a methodical approach (an orderly way) They believe in ‘salvation’ (if you have done wrong, you can be saved) They have been known to have lively and enthusiastic ways of praying Baptists Only allow adults, not children to be baptised Have adult baptism Place a lot of importance on the Bible Free to worship as they want to Have no chain of command but instead have leaders called ‘ministers’ Write out any words you do not understand and ask your teacher to give you the meanings.
