In today's learning format, my comparison is between traditional courses and asynchronous courses in American colleges and universities. The traditional-style class represents a course with real-time lectures, while an asynchronous-style class is a fully online course with no onsite lectures. First, traditional courses have predetermined days and times of the week, allowing students to devote a firm time to those classes. As a result, they specialize in continuous learning and are said to have a high level of learning maturity. The advantages of this course are that the scheduled class timetable simplifies self-management of life and study time outside of class, and the quick question-and-answer sessions during and after class eliminate wasted time and improve learning efficiency. Also, the lecture using an Internet connection, such as ZOOM, has become mainstream in recent years. It is a revolutionary and convenient way to receive ongoing lectures as if students were on campus, even when they are in a remote location. This saves time spent traveling and getting ready, so they can spend their own time on other things. As international students, class times are also a great opportunity to learn live English in a real-life speed lecture. As a disadvantage of this type of course, since learning progresses in the class altogether, it is difficult to understand the content afterward once students get stuck in the class. Students may feel frustrated and stressed if their pace does not match the speed at which the class progresses. The lectures held in class are given on the spot, so they will not be able to listen to the same lesson repeatedly.
Moreover, grades are often based on attendance and how actively students participate in class. Therefore, depending on each personality, it may be difficult to get a good grade. Second, there is the asynchronous, completely online type of course. In this type, of course, there is no timetable established in advance, allowing students to study at their own pace. In much asynchronous coursework, all course content, and assignments to be completed during the semester are listed beforehand, and the professor provides only a guideline for the pace of study. The advantages are that students can create a realistic study schedule that suits one' s needs, and the ability to devote as much time as desired to deepen one's understanding of the content that one has difficulty with, or on which one wants to focus. Assignments are usually due at the end of the semester, so students can adjust their pace of study based on their level of understanding and schedule. Also, since the rate of submission of assignments is reflected in the rate of attendance, it is relatively easy to get good grades. On the other hand, one disadvantage of this course is that the number of assignments is extremely large instead of having no lectures. Therefore, self-management of the schedule is essential. If students do not schedule sufficient and adequate time for study, assignments will mount up at the end of the semester. Also, although questions and answers are available via e-mail, it is not certain when responses will come from the professor, so it cannot be guaranteed that they will be resolved as quickly as possible. In addition, students will be completely on their own, so there is no opportunity to communicate with others. And some fields are difficult to learn without experience in real-time, so a quality learning experience may not be possible. Language study abroad is a good example of this,
