Conflicts can originate due to factors such as unequal power distribution, unequal access to resources, past history of distrust, misgivings and lack of communication. It generally arises because communication is not easy to establish between the conflicting parties. Media, as we are aware, is an important facilitator of information and discussion in democracies like India. The degree of freedom of expression and freedom of the press is in proportion to the quality of development, human rights and dialogue in a democracy. There have been some instances in the past when media has actually fuelled conflicts, leading to loss of lives and property. Thus, while media needs to have freedom it also has to be responsible in reporting. 39
