MIME POP3 IMAP

EMAIL

  • The first email systems simply consisted by file transfer protocols.
  • Email Architecture and Services

i. User agents: They allow the people to read and send e–

mail.

ii. Message transfer agents: They move the messages from

the source to destination.

EMAIL ENVELOPE

  • An email envelope contains the message, destination address, priority, security level etc.
  • Message:
  • The actual message inside the envelope is made of the following two parts:
  • (i) Header: Carries the control information
  • (ii) Body: Contains the message contents

MAIL ACCESS PROTOCOLS

  • There are two mail access protocols being used as under:
  • (i) Post office protocol^ -^ POP version 3^ POP 3
  • (ii) Internet Message Access Protocol Version 4 IMAP 4

MODES OF POP

  • POP3 has the following two modes:
  • (i) Delete mode, and
  • (ii) Keep mode Delete mode: Mail is deleted from the mailbox after each retrieval. Keep mode: Mail remains in the mailbox after retrieval. This mode is used when the user access mail away from the primary computer

IMAP

  • Internet Mail Access Protocol Version 4
  • Has more features than POP
  • More powerful but more complex
  • Extra features:
  • 1.^ Possible for the user to check the header before downloading
  • 2. Possible for the user to search for the contents of E-mail before downloading
  • 3.^ Possible for the user to create, rename or delete mailboxes on the mail server
  • 4. Possible for the user to create a hierarchy of mailboxes in a folder for e–mail storage
