ECE 260 Confidentiality Exercise Issue #1: Mia’s father has signed a “Release of Information” to give you permission to contact the child psychologist who has been counseling with Mia’s parents in managing Mia’s behavior. You have sent a written request for a summary letter and called his office three times, leaving more detailed message each time, but he has never responded. It appears to you that he has no intention of sharing information with you. What do you do? If there was already permission and Mia’s dad had given me the teacher's access information with the psychologist and if I have called three different times, that’s when I would with the director of the school and have a meeting. Going to speak with the director can benefit the relationship between them because then I would feel like I am being supported through this tough situation. Hopefully, the director and the psychologist can try to reach out to dad while he isn’t here during pick up but I would approach the situation gently and patiently but still get my concerns across. Issue #2: Ethan has been in your child care program now for 5 months. You obtained written permission from his parents to contact his physical therapist and early intervention specialist. His child care file includes materials from both of these specialists, your daily notes and developmental progress reports, medical records which his parents filled out, and your child care enrollment form. In the fall, he will go to a special preschool half-days; the teacher calls you to request that you send her “any information you have about Ethan which will help her in assimilating him into her class.” What should you send her? The information that I would send her is the goals that Ethan has reached and is able to attain within the classroom, I would also send over his classwork, big and small group projects, spelling, writing, and reading skills as well. Also, I would send the teacher the assessments that we have to do quarterly so that I can see where the class is and with this assessment can see who may need extra help or others who may be advanced as well, basically any documentation, medical records, physical therapy date and times and that he will have half days and that his parents are on board as well.
