Conflicting Practices & Ideas

As if Persecutions & Heresies were not enough!

1. Paschal Controversy

  • (^) Pascha (Greek) – Passover
  • (^) What is the proper date for Easter? Traditional Jewish date ( th of Nissan) Or 1 st^ Sunday after the 1st^ full moon of Spring

2. Rule by the One God

  1. Modalistic Monarchianism (Sabellius) – God appears in various “disguises” or modes…but then did the Creator God suffer on the Cross? (Patripassionism)
  2. Dynamic Monarchianism – (Paul of Samosata) The power of God rested upon Jesus, If Jesus “grew in wisdom, stature, and favor with God & man” then he was not the Logos but merely benefited from the gift of God’s Wisdom.

3. Church/State Relations

  1. Apologists argued that Christians were ideal citizens
  2. Christians did not rebel against Rome although some died as martyrs
  3. Argued for sharp separation of Church and State (which was after all pagan)

5. Views of the Church Evolve

  1. All members are Saints
  2. The Clergy (leadership) must be Saints
  3. The Church embraced “Saints” and “Sinners”…mostly perceive themselves as sinners who admire heroic saints.
  4. Sacraments of the Church are the only true sacred elements as all individuals are sinners. (Augustine, 4 th - th century)
