Chemistry 1215 Syllabus
Principles of Chemistry I Laboratory
Fall 2007
Course Description: Principles of Chemistry I Lab must be taken concurrently with Chemistry 1210.
It consists of one three-hour period of discussion and laboratory work per week. One credit hour.
Instructor: David Burr
Work Phone: 673.4682 (Dixie High School)
Home Phone: 628.4319
Email: dburr@dixiehigh.org
Rationale: The course will give a hands-on, experimental experience with many of the topics studied
in Chemistry 1210 and will give you the opportunity to develop your lab skills.
Objectives: After completing Chemistry 1215 you should be able to
1. master the use of basic laboratory equipment and techniques of laboratory
measurement and procedure.
2. apply mathematical models to the analysis of laboratory data.
3. record scientific data and complete a laboratory report.
4. learn about the uncertaintity in scientific measurements and be able to
calculate absolute and relative error.
5. distinguish between precision and accuracy.
6. gain an experimental understanding of the concepts covered in 1210 lecture.
Method of Instruction: Laboratory periods will begin with a pre-lab discussion and then the
students will perform the experiments.
Textbook: General Chemistry I Lab Manual. Thomson Learning: Mason, OH 2003
Course Grading: Course grades will be based on successful completion of the experiments. Each
lab is worth a maximum of ten points.
Your semester grade will be determined from a raw percentage of points earned by doing lab reports:
90-100% A
80-89% B
70-79% C
60-69% D
<60% F
You will lose one letter grade for each lab that is missed. You are expected to attend the section of the
