ANSWERY ¥ Longer sentences do reduce crime because an increase in age reduces rales or recidivism, but the higher rates or incarceration has the effect of more disenchantment of pooer and minatory populations and less emphasis on reducing crime by reducing the liklyhood of a person committing a first offense though education and mental health interventions. Does imprisoning people reduce crime? Does it increase crime? Describe why these are problematic questions. ANSWER¥ V While it does both, increase and decrease crime the question should be what can be done to prevent crime from happing and if it does happen what programs can be uscd to prevent recidivism and what programs have the opposite effect. Identify, describe, and give examples of various types of research designs, including longitudinal, cross-sectional, and experimental ANS WER¥ ¥ Cross-sectional- provides a snapshot at a certain point in time. Causation typically cannot be inferred. Survey a sample of prisoner's families at a given point in time provides a "snapshot" - can't show change
