that, together, form a people’s way of life.
Society refers to people who interact in a defined territory and
share culture.

Culture Culture refers to the beliefs, values, behavior and material objects that, together, form a people’s way of life. Society refers to people who interact in a defined territory and share culture.

Culture shock refers to personal disorientation when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life II. Components of Culture Components of Culture – all cultures have five common components: symbols, language, values, beliefs and norms. Symbols are defined as anything that carries a particular meaning recognized by people who share culture. The meaning of the same symbol varies from society to society, within a single society, overtime. Language is essential to human thought. The origin of language arose when early “humans” began to blend calls from their signal system to create new meanings.

Ideology is a set of cultural beliefs that helps to maintain and justify political and social class interests. American Values as defined by Robin Williams are:  Equal opportunity  Achievement and success  Material comfort  Activity and work  Practicality and efficiency  Progress  Science  Democracy and free enterprise  Freedom  Racism and group superiority  Values within one’s society a frequent

III. Technology and Culture  Intangible elements of society are values and norms  Intangible human creations are called artifacts Gerhard Lenski and Jean Lenski focused there works on examining the evolution of new technology in society.  Hunting and Gathering  Horticulture & Pastoralism(domestication of animals, i.e. horse,)  Agriculture  Industry  Postindustrial Information technology IV. Cultural Diversity Heavy immigration has made the US the most multicultural of all industrial countries.
