 Introduction to Strategic Information

  • The strategic information is information that plays a vital role while taking decisions which helps the company in staying competitive in the market.
  • In the 1990 s, as businesses grew more complex, corporations spread globally, and competition became fiercer.
  • Business executives became desperate for information to stay competitive and improve the bottom line.
  • The operational computer systems did provide information to run the day-to-day operations.
  • But what the executives needed were different kinds of information that could be used ready to make strategic decisions.
  • The decision makers wanted to know which geographic regions to focus on , which product lines to expand , and which markets to strengthen.
  • They needed the type of information with proper content and format that could help them make such strategic decisions. 5

  • Who needs strategic information in an enterprise? What exactly do we mean by strategic information?
  • The executives and managers who are responsible for keeping the enterprise competitive need information to make proper decisions.
  • They need information to formulate the business strategies, establish goals, set objectives, and monitor results.
  • Here are some examples of business objectives:

 Need for Strategic Information

8

  • Executives and managers need to focus their attention on customers’ needs and preferences, emerging technologies, sales and marketing results, and quality levels of products and services.
  • The types of information needed to make decisions in the formulation and execution of business strategies and objectives are broad based and encompass the entire organization.
  • All these types of essential information may be combined under the broad classification called strategic information.
  • Strategic information is not for running the day-to-day operations of the business.
  • Strategic information is far more important for the continued health and survival of the corporation. 10
  • Critical business decisions depend on the availability of proper strategic information in an enterprise. Figure 1 - 2 lists the desired characteristics of strategic information. Figure:- 1.2 Characteristics of strategic Information 11
  • We all are aware of how technology has been changing over the past few decades.
  • The digital storage, network bandwidth has been increasing along with the decrease in price. But the question is how this is relevant to strategic information.
  • The miniaturization of the hardware has made it available for everyone desk.
  • The internet allows us to interact with the number of systems and databases far away.
  • The advances in technology have made the digital storage bigger and it’s cost smaller which fulfils the need of larger data storage.

 Technology Trends

13

  • The internet let executives and managers perform interactive analysis. This is how advancing technology has made strategic information feasible.
  • The strategic information helps the executives and manager to grasp future opportunities and also alters them from the risk and failure while making the decision for the betterment of the company. 14
  • The result obtained from this interactive system must be in a format that would be easily analysed. Later the special suite of programs was written to extract the reports. If the reports were inappropriate IT individuals would again write a different program.
  • Further some small applications were written to extract the required information. In these applications, the user has to specify certain ‘parameters’ based on which the information was extracted.
  • Later in the 1970 s, the bigger companies would create the data centre where the user can go and request for particular information. IT personnel were present there to help the user in extracting the information. 16
  • Later the decision support systems were generated which were ‘menu-driven’ and provide the online information to the users. Most of these systems were used for marketing. All these attempts fail due to the reason specified below:
  • The IT resources were limited and they would get enormous requests for ad hoc reports and their requests keep on changing with time which would create an overload for IT personnel.
  • The user has to depend on IT personnel for extracting the information each time.
  • The information extracting system has to be feasible in order to provide an appropriate environment for making a decision which didn’t happen.
  • So, there was a need for a more favourable system for extracting strategic information. 17

 Operational Vs Informational

19

  • At this stage of our discussion, we now realize that we do need different types of decision support systems to provide strategic information.
  • The type of information needed for strategic decision making is different from that available from operational systems.
  • We need a new type of system environment for the purpose of providing strategic information for analysis, discerning trends, and monitoring performance.
  • Let us examine the desirable features and processing requirements of this new type of system environment.
  • Let us also consider the advantages of this type of system environment designed for strategic information.
