An introduction to the concept of energy in physics. It explains the different forms of energy, such as mechanical, heat, light, chemical, and atomic energy. The document also defines mechanical energy, potential energy, and kinetic energy, and provides formulas to calculate them. It includes an example problem to determine the mechanical energy of a person sitting on a building.

The energy of a body is its ability to do work.it is measured by the amount of work that it can perform. the SI unit of energy is joul. There are many forms of energy , such as mechanical energy, heat energy, light energy, chemical and atomic energy. Mechanical energy Mechanical energy is the energy possessed by an object due to its motion or position. EMechanical energy = U+K U=Potential energy = mgh K = Kinetic energy = 1/2mv^2 Hence Emechanical energy=1/2mv^2 +mgh
Potential energy of a body is the energy it possesses by virtue of its position or state of strain. Eg: water stored up in a reservoir, a wound spring, compressed air.
For a body of mass m remaining at rest at a height h above the ground , the potential energy is equal to the work done in raising the body from the ground to the height. The work done=force x displacement =mg x h Potential energy = mgh joule G = acceleration due to gravity.
Energy possessed by it on account of its motion. Eg: water flow, Moving car For a body of mass m moving with a velocity v the kinetic energy is given by Kinetic energy =1/2 mv^2 1.a person is sitting on a building of height 10m and mass of the person is 100kg. determine the mechanical energy.? Mechanical energy=U+K H = 10m m = 100kg the person is in static state so kinetic energy = mechanical energy = kinetic energy + potential energy = 0+100x9.81x =9810 J Mechanical energy = 9810 J
