Name:_____________________________________Section (Day/Time):_____________ Diet Analysis Project Part 2: Diet Analysis, Summary and Conclusions PROCEDURE: Fill in the tables and answer the questions below, based on data from the computer analysis of your 3 day diet records. I. Energy Nutrients: Nutrient DRI Intake (3 Day Average) % Goal * (Bar Graph of 3 Day Average) Calories (kcals) Carbohydrates (grams) Fat - Total (grams) Protein (grams) Saturated Fat (grams) Less than:_______g (from Profile DRI Goals) Cholesterol (milligrams) < 300 mg Essential Fatty Acid: Linoleic (grams) Essential Fatty Acid: Linolenic (grams) Dietary Fiber (grams) *if the % goal is not given you can leave the box blank
II. Vitamins A B C D E Nutrient DRI Intake (3 Day Average) % Goal (Bar Graph of 3 Day Average) Top Food Source from your diet and the amount of the vitamin it contains (Nutrient Spreadsheets) * See directions below Vitamin B (IU) Vitamin B (micrograms) Folate (DFE) Vitamin C (milligrams) Vitamin D (ug) Vitamin A (RAE) alpha-tochopherol: Vitamin E (milligrams) Directions: Look at your intake of this vitamin, did you consume 60% or more of your goal for this vitamin (see column D)? If you did then look through your spreadsheets of days 1 - 3 and find the one food that supplied the highest amount of this vitamin in your diet (circle the amount it provided on your spreadsheets). Write this food and the amount of the vitamin it contained in column E. However, if you did not consume 60% or more of your goal for this vitamin, go to your textbook and find 2 food sources that you can add to your diet to supply this vitamin. List these 2 food sources in column E.
IV. Evaluating Your Energy Intake Calculate whether you are in ENERGY BALANCE. Energy balance is the difference between the amount of energy (calories) you consume each day and the amount of energy (calories) you use each day. If the difference between these is small (less than 200 calories) then you are in energy balance and should be maintaining your body weight. If the difference between your energy intake and the calories you use is greater than 500 calories, your body energy stores will be affected. Your Energy (Calorie) Balance (find the values for this calculation on the Intake and DRI Goals Compared page) = ____________kcals Note: If this number is greater than 500 kcals then your body weight (energy stores) should be changing. If the number you calculated is a positive value then you should be gaining weight because you’re eating more energy than you’re using. If the numbe r is a negative value then you should be losing weight because you’re using more energy than you’re eating.
following questions. (a.) What changes in your body weight (energy stores) would you expect based on the difference between the calories you are consuming versus the calories you are using? (b.) Has your body weight changed lately? _____yes _____no If yes, does this correspond to your answer in (a.) If no, then what other explanation could there be for this difference between your estimated calorie intake and the recommended calories (your estimated energy expenditure). Your energy intake: ________ kcal Energy used by your body Your DRI:________ kcal
V. Source of your energy intake: Macronutrient Ranges & Fat Breakdown Directions: From your computer printout find the following page: Macronutrient Ranges (~page 4) Use the information on this page to fill out the following:
Energy Nutrient Recommended % of total calories that should be supplied by this nutrient for a healthy diet. The % of total calories supplied by this nutrient in your diet. Carbohydrates 45 - 65% ________________% Protein 10 - 35% ________________% Fats 20 - 35% ________________% Alcohol 0% ________________%

Write a 1 page (maximum) DOUBLE- SPACED typewritten summary on what you learned from this COMPUTER ANALYSIS project about your food intake. Be specific, select ONE problem in your diet and explain the following: Identify the problem you have found in your dietary intake. Give the evidence (e.g. %DRI) you found in your diet analysis that indicates this is a problem. Explain why this dietary problem is important for you to change (i.e. What are the potential long term health effects of this problem if it continues? Given your family history of certain chronic diseases how will this problem affect your health? etc.) How do you plan to change your current diet based on information you learned doing this assignment. Think about all that you have learned in this class about the nutrients and the foods they are found in, as well as, other factors that are important to good nutrition. Use this information to discuss what you have discovered about your diet and what you plan to change. Please be specific (e.g. how much milk do you need to add to meet your calcium DRI?) and realistic (e.g. to lower your sodium intake are you really going to stop using table salt?). Take into consideration what you really can do (or will do) to change your diet. FINAL REPORT CHECKLIST All of the following must be completed and handed in together for a complete FINAL REPORT. 3 - day food diary Computer analysis (originals and any corrections) This worksheet packet 1 page typewritten summary of your dietary changes
