MANAGEMENT

DISASTER -

Disaster is the disruption on a massive scale. It can be natural or

manmade. It occurs in short or long periods of time. It can lead to

human hardship. It can lead to economic hardship. It can lead to

environmental hardship. It can lead to material hardship.

These hardships are beyond the bearable capacity of society.

This basically impacts the coastal regions of India that are the Western coast and Eastern coast. Approximately 12% of Indian land is vulnerable to Floods. Around 68% of Indian land under cultivation is vulnerable to Droughts. Around 5800 out of 7516.6 km of the coastal area is vulnerable due to Cyclones and Tsunamis. India is vulnerable to Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (Chernobyl disaster, Nuclear disasters) (CBRN) emergencies.

There are types of disasters like Biological (Viral epidemic, Pest epidemic, Pandemics), Manmade (Oil spillage, Huge structures, Urban and forest fires, Urban floods), and Water and Climate (Cyclones, Thunderstorms, Hail, Cloud Burst, Tornadoes, Lightning, and Droughts) disasters. In India, Disaster risks are compounded by various other issues : Unplanned Urbanization Demographics and socio- economic conditions Development in the high-risk zone Environmental degradation Climate change (^) Epidemics and Pandemics Page 5

Water and Climatic Disasters : (^) Floods Cyclones Hurricanes Hailstorms Cloudburst Heat waves Cold waves Drought Tsunami Storm surge

Industrial Disasters : Leakage of chemicals

Industrial accidents Oil spills Mines shaft wires Nuclear Disasters : Radioactive poisoning Nuclear core meltdown

Geological disasters :

Landslides Earthquakes Tornadoes Volcanic eruptions Page 8

Volcanic Earthquakes : Volcanic earthquakes, also known as volcano-tectonic earthquakes or volcanic tremors, are seismic events associated with volcanic activity. These earthquakes are caused by the movement of molten rock (magma) beneath the Earth’s surface and are typically an integral part of the volcanic process. Collapse Earthquakes : Collapse Earthquakes occur in the region of mining.

Explosion Earthquakes : Explosion earthquakes occur when underground explosions, such as nuclear tests, generate seismic waves, resembling natural earthquakes. Reservoir- Induced Earthquakes : Due to hydraulic pressure the surface of the reservoir gets shaken. For example : Artifical lake / Reservoir. ThankThank Thank you!you!you!
