DISASTER

PREPAREDNESS

BY: JONABEL M. PARDIÑAS

Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety,

and losses that accompany disasters. ...

People also can reduce the impact of

disasters (flood proofing, elevating a home

or moving a home out of harm's way, and

securing items that could shake loose in an

earthquake) and sometimes avoid the

danger completely.

EARTHQUAKE An earthquake is the result of a sudden release of stored energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. PREPARE BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE

TO DO BEFORE THE EARTHQUAKE

Make sure you have a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, and extra batteries at home. Make up a plan of where to meet your family after an earthquake BEFORE IF YOU ARE INDOORS -- STAY THERE! GET UNDER A DESK OR TABLE AND HANG ON TO IT (DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON!) OR MOVE INTO A HALLWAY OR AGAINST AN INSIDE WALL. STAY CLEAR OF WINDOWS, FIREPLACES, AND HEAVY FURNITURE OR APPLIANCES. DURING (^) AFTER IF YOU'RE CAUGHT IN AN AFTERSHOCK: STAY CALM. IF YOU'RE INDOORS, DON'T GO OUTSIDE. STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS AND DOORS. IF YOU'RE OUTDOORS, STAY IN AN OPEN AREA, AWAY FROM POWER LINES OR ANYTHING THAT MIGHT FALL. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER, FIRST AID KIT, A BATTERY- POWERED RADIO, A FLASHLIGHT, AND EXTRA BATTERIES AT HOME. LEARN FIRST AID. MAKE UP A PLAN OF WHERE TO MEET YOUR FAMILY AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE. DON'T LEAVE HEAVY OBJECTS ON SHELVES. EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS
