Bellwork Activity: Understanding the Structure and Composition of DNA, Study notes of Genetics

A step-by-step guide for students to learn about the structure and composition of DNA. It includes filling in the blanks, pre-test instructions, and information about DNA's shape, function, and components. Students are asked to color and cut out pieces to construct a small segment of DNA, applying the rules of base pairing.

What you will learn

  • What makes up the rungs of the DNA ladder?
  • Is there a pattern to how nitrogen bases fit together in the DNA ladder?
  • How do the two strands of DNA run in relation to each other?
  • What is the significance of Chargaff's Rule in understanding DNA structure?
  • What makes up the sides of the DNA ladder?

Bellwork 2/

Fill in the blanks of the sentence:

DNA has a twisted ladder shape that we call a

_____________________. Segments of DNA code for

specific traits, these are called_______________. DNA

can also be tightly coiled in a shape called a

________________. Except when doing mitosis or meiosis,

our DNA is located in the ___________ of our cells.

Pre-Test

  • number a piece of paper 1-
  • Please do not write on the test
  • When finished, begin coloring 8 phosphate groups, 8 deoxyriboses, 2 adenines, 2 thymines, 2 cytosines , and 2 guanines.

DNA, the basics

  • DNA is short for deoxyribonucleic acid.
  • DNA is in a double helix shape, this looks like a ladder that has been twisted.

DNA, the basics

  • DNA is located in the nucleus of cells in the form of chromosomes and stores our genetic information.

DNA, the basics

  • DNA is a polymer , which means it is composed of many smaller segments called nucleotides.
  • The arrangement of these nucleotides determines what the DNA will code for.

DNA, the basics

  • Nucleotides build like Legos to make DNA strands.
  • Each nucleotide in DNA has:
    • A sugar (Deoxyribose)
    • A phosphate group
    • A nitrogen base

DNA, the basics

  • There are 4 nitrogen bases for DNA: - Adenine (A) - Thymine (T) - Cytosine (C) - Guanine (G)

The nitrogen bases link together to form the “rungs” of the DNA ladder.

Making DNA

  • Your sheet has parts for you and your partner, you each need:
    • 8 phosphates
    • 8 deoxyribose sugars
    • 2 guanines
    • 2 cytosines
    • 2 adenines
    • 2 thymines Color each of these a unique color

Making DNA: Cut Out

  • 4 Deoxyribose sugars
  • 4 Phosphates
  • 1 Adenine
  • 1 Cytosine
  • 1 Guanine
  • 1 Thymine

Constructing DNA

  • Using your new notes, and the symbols on the pieces, try to assemble a small segment of DNA.
  • Each symbol matches one other symbol
  • Pay attention to which nitrogen bases (adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine) fit together. Are they the same as other people at your table?

Questions

  1. If DNA is a ladder, what makes up the rungs? What makes up the sides?
  2. What do you notice about the arrangement of the two sides? Do they run in the same direction?
  3. Is there any pattern to how the nitrogen bases (cytosine, adenine, thymine, and guanine) fit together?

DNA, the basics

  • DNA’s 2 strands run opposite each other.
  • DNA has direction , we read DNA 5’ to 3’.
