Pre reading

  1. Thomas’s title is also the first line of his poem. What type of sentence does he begin his poem with, and what tone does this sentence establish?
  2. Who was Dylan Thomas? Give the reading of his poem background context by providing three important background facts.

During Reading

  1. Annotate the poem – identify on the poem any sound techniques or comparisons.
  2. Thomas’s poem is a specific type, characterized by a particular rhyme scheme/pattern of repetition/number of lines. What is it?
  3. Pay close attention to the repetitions in the poem. What else is repeated – words or related words? Can you find any repeated images? Identify the modified use of anaphora in the poem. What do these repetitions suggest?
  4. Now look at the movement Thomas creates through the use of syllabic patterns in the poem. a. Can you tell what type of foot is predominantly used in the poem? b. Read the lines in the poem out loud. How many beats do you hear per line? c. Thomas uses words of a particular syllabic length. How does this affect the way you read the poem – the way you say the poem?
  1. As we mentioned before, repetitions are important for both what they repeat – and what they change. In the “body stanza” of the poem, what is changed? What is the topic of each stanza?

  1. In a paragraph, sum up what you believe is the purpose of this poem. Take into account the subject of the poem, the dominant impression created by the repeated images and lines, and the movement created by the feet/word length. What is Thomas trying to communicate to his reader?
